Hey,

I have a 2007 Saturn Ion II with an issue at the gas station once I fuel up.

It starts fine everywhere else but not when I put gas in it.

Try to start it the car it cuts off and you have to crank it for a bit like it is not getting any gas.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Have a great day and be thankful you are Southern!

Sounds like a evap purge solenoid stuck in open position causing excessive vapor and/or fuel to go where it’s not supposed to.

Yep.

Next time you stop at the gas station, instead of fueling up, go inside and get a Zero bar and a diet Dr. Pepper.

Try cranking your car after that and see what happens.

We'll get to the bottom of this.

Purge solenoid failed open should have set a P0496 code for "flow during non-purge". Typically when they fail open, they never close again. Easy to check it though. Purge solenoid is usually mounted on the engine, probably where the EVAP test port is. Just pop that sucker off and see try to blow through it. It's a normally closed valve.

To see if it's getting too much fuel, when you crank it at the gas station and it doesn't start: try holding the gas pedal to the floor. That turns off the fuel injectors while cranking.

Try just stopping and removing and replacing the fuel cap and see if it does it then. Then do like the rest of us and don't stop the car to refuel anymore.

My F150 does it, I just leave it running when I fill up. If I do shut it off, usually hold the pedal to the floor and crank it thing works.
