Now that ammo is scarce, and self defense ammo has become unobtainium, some close friends have inquired about casting them some hollow points.
I thought it would be a great spot to start a thread on casting hollow points.
People could post questions, pics. Success and failures.

I'll try to.keep Hollowpoint group buys updated here so people could get in line when available
Here's one for a 147gr 9mm. Looks like it should run in the near future

8mm hp group buy

223/556 63gr hp group buy

If I were getting into casting,, and wanted any HP bullets,, the ONLY molds I'd use are Miha's molds. His HP design is EASY to use,, as compared to others. His molds aren't cheap,, and often the wait time to get one can stretch out,, but they have all been well worth it to me.

Totally agree

Not as hard as you think. And you only need them at pistol velocities. Most alloys are going to expand at 1400 FPS and faster. At 1200 and faster HPs usually shed their noses.

I do some in 230 gr .452 for 45 acp. Powdercoat with what ever is on hand. The loose are a neon green mixed with a red.
NOE aluminum 4 holer mold

I agree about Miha's new molds, but don't forget about HP Mold Service. His hp conversion is excellent. I have a few he has done Cramer-style. I will be sending him an Arsenal 476-415swc 4cav soon. Expensive, but not all styles come factory hp'ed.

HP charges $75 and up a cavity for a conversion depending on the price pins, but he's good. Really wish Miha had something like that Arsenal 476-415swc in a multi pin mold. It's the best heavy 475 I have tried yet. Accurate, very wide maplat, hits like Thor's hammer, and penetration stays straight on anything I have shot yet. Never have recovered one from game.

Need many pics

I will run that for you. Pm me a link off accurate molds website of something close to what you’re wanting. Will run simultaneously on Singke Action pro boards as well. Bob K might already have a design. Some MP molds never make it to the website.

The closest to it by Accurate is the 48-400K. There's significant difference between them. I own that mold too. Total difference in the accuracy from my 480 and 475. The Arsenal just out shoots it in the Ruger, BFR, and the FA. I would be happy to send some bullets to you to try. If someone wants some to get the diamentions from I have a few to send.
The Arsenal site only lists the bare minimum of it.

Added some additional HP group buys at the bottom of the original post

I've been seeing some posts elsewhere that Miha has experienced some molds being confiscated by Customs in Chicago. Apparently,, they freak out about ANYTHING firearm related. And Miha is working on figuring out how to handle this.

While I don't cast hollow points, I do cast hollow base meaning Civil War type minies.
These are 3 types I shoot in competition. The gigantic wadcutter on the right is a seriously accurate bullet for 50yd musket competition. It'll do one ragged hole if you can hold it. What I've found in casting these is run the pot hot, like 850+ and keep that core pin hot to eliminate voids.

How do you keep the powder coat out of the cavities so uniformly and purdy?
I had been using a jig I fixed. It had roofing nails driven thru sheet metal. I just put the bullet hp on the nail suspending it upside down. Those were done with an electrostatic gun. And they turn out beautiful.
The ones I do now, I put them in a butter container with the powder, and shake them up. Then I retrieve them with a small set of pliers , and tap the side of the container which causes the powder to fall out of the hollow point.
While not as perfect smooth, it saves a lot of time. They look like the following.

When I'm powder coating cast bullets,, I use a vibrating tumbler. And after tumbled, I use a plastic colander to shake off the excess. Never get a build-up of powder in the HP area.

I've been doing shake and bake but give them a few shakes in a mesh basket to clear them out.
Going to try some 358439 next

.452 230gr HP's. Got both molds online from a custom bullet mold company. They modify LEE bullet molds so the finished mold price is very low. I have had these 2 for maybe 4 1/2 years and they still cast well. This is them here. hollowpointmold.com They can modify your existing molds and randomly they will have some for sale as well. Just add the www to the front of that address. It wouldn't let me post it as an actual link. I'm new here so still learning LOL.

Got in the mp360-640 dual crimp mold from a group buy. Waiting on surgery next week to have my gallbladder removed so really haven't been up to casting. Looking to try it over shooters world heavy pistol in 357mag. Should be interesting.
It's between that one, the mp358429, or the mp360-180 as to which will be my deer hunting choice from the OM blackhawk.
