The option package I wanted on my new ride came with stuff I didn't want, specifically it came with "body colored" door handles and mirrors and a tacky ass chrome grill. I want them flat black like on the other models.

I figure I've got some choices on how to change it:

1. buy the OE parts in black (expensive! and a PITA)
2. spray-on "wrap" like the duplicolor stuff (apparently doesn't last very long?)
3. professional vinyl wrap
4. some sort of spray paint (can that look anything but ghetto?)
5. get the vinyl wrap and do it myself (never done such a thing)

Other ideas? Anyone try any of these before it any success?

I also might do the wheels, but I'm really going to use the spray-on stuff even it only lasts a little while because I'm not sure I want them blacked out.

Jayne, last year I ordered a Ford F150, short bed, short cab, rubber floor mats, with roll-up windows and not a piece of chrome anywhere. Like you, I wanted a plain truck. The dealer said he wasn't sure Ford would take the order...they did. I love it, no chrome anywhere. Good luck on your "conversion".

Plastidip.

I did wheels, grill, and bumper chrome in it. Put on correctly it’s very durable. And peels off like tape if desired later. Watch a YouTube video or two about it. I love the stuff

Powdercoat is a good option. The parts are electrostaticly charged and plastic powder is sprayed on them then baked to a solid coating. There are probably several places nearby that can do it for you and it's not expensive.

While I can understand the chrome grill, why change the mirrors and handles?

Cause black is beautiful

I kinda did the same thing with my truck but I did leave the chrome door handles and mirrors but the factory grille was hideous. I actually ordered OEM parts but they weren’t cheap.

It's look 1000x better with black hardware on a white vehicle. The high contrast makes it look more industrial, and less soccer mom.

I got a new Accord this year and searched a bunch of forums about it. Wrapping the chrome trim is a frequent mod that people have done. Some guys do it themselves but it seems that most have their local thumper car stereo shop or tint shop do it for them.

watched some videos today, it does look easy to apply and pretty goof proof. I think this is the route I'll take for round #1, and if it starts to peel/peal/sail/sell I'll get more serious.

All this chrome hate.
Your daddy, granddaddy, and great grandaddy probably all loved chrome.

In fact, you need to bring you and your daddy back out to H20 tomorrow. We miss shooting with y'all.

it's not hate, it's.... uh yea, it's hate. never mind.

I'm in a carbine class tomorrow. First ever. I'm also on a 45 day hiatus from pistols. I was starting to go down hill, so I'm taking a break. 45 days, no live fire, but nightly dry practice. We'll see if it helps with the flinch.

Please, keep me posted on this 45 day gig. I insist that my folks do it daily. Cooper said live fire is for verification only.

I used Plastidip on my front air dam 3 or 4 years ago. Still holding up fine. And ... it can be pealed off without hurting the paint underneath.

If you want the lowdown on Plastidip head over to Tacoma World...the TW Bros swear by it. I'm pretty sure they would Plastidip a whole truck.

Plastidip.com sells whole car kits including an electric “Wagner type” sprayer

Yes.

Right prep work and you can get very good results with a can.

My old truck had a black plastic piece on the front bumper that would fade in the sun. After trying all kinds of products to bring it back to black and even replacing it one time and it doing it again in a year i decided to try the paint method for plastic. It held up good but would scratch easy but still last much longer than the black plastic color to the sun. So i just sprayed it ever couple years to keep it looking good. This was all before the plasti dip stuff came out or really took off. My suggestion if you go this route is be prepared to redo it every 3 -4 years or atleast touch it up.

I tried some plastidip today. Didn't look very good on the handle at all, but looked great on the chrome badging. I'll retry the handle again, I can see there are going to be some tricks with this stuff to get it looking right.

Need to do more cleanup, but I think it's going to work:
