Fruitcake is the best thing ever!!!

Southern Supreme fruitcake 👍

A friend from the UK posted pictures of her lebkuchen cookies that she made and now I want to try them.

Another one of our traditions is to make a giant baked Ziti the night people are coming into town. Usually the day before Christmas Eve and have it out so when you get here and get settled in all you have to do is grab a plate and reheat it. There is usually a homemade bread and salad as well. It allows people to show up whenever and still have food. It gets snacked on for the rest of the holiday.

I must be wierd. I love fruitcake. My parent's accountant made the best ever and gifted one to our family every year. I used to sneek bits from the cake after everyone was asleep as a child.

I have made several over the many years that were nearly as good but, alas most of my family have fallean under the "you must not like fruitcake" spell and I quit making them.

Christmas pudding (sort of big steamed ball of suet, various fruits and stuff all drenched in brandy you set on fire before serving) and minced pies. I haven't been able to find either in the stores this year (you sometimes find them in fancier grocery stores, but it's sort of ghetto around here) although I admit I didn't really busy a gut looking.

Doesn't feel like Christmas and I was never exactly jolly old Saint Nich to start with. Just going to be me and the dog and some meatloaf and apple pie this year.

I make mine similar to this. I skip the celery though. Just not a fan of it.

First of all, Why in God's name would you ruin perfectly good sausage balls with celery?

Second, Jimmy Dean is the wrong sausage for that. It needs to be super cheap and super greasy.

I didn't know we had met.

Yes, yes it is!! 😊 I make one from an old family recipe called Franklin Nut Cake. It has a QUART of chopped pecans in it, a pound of the colored cherries and just enough cake to hold it all together. Once it is baked you drizzle just a little bit of whiskey over it and wrap it tightly in cling wrap and foil for a day or two to absorb. Didn't make one this year though. 😞

I like to do an old school (to me, anyway) ham with cloves, pineapple rings & brandy 'n brown sugar glaze.

I grill a mean beef tenderloin every now & again, for a change of pace.

Green bean casserole is a given, along with Watergate salad.

Lots & lots of "Girl Scout cookies"- hot chocolate with a stiff pour of peppermint schnapps.

Bro, no one should spend the holidays alone. Grab yer pup & ride on down this way.

Thanks for the offer, but I'll be fine. I'm pretty much a hermit these days and it's becoming my new normal. I'm really not anybody I'd want to inflict on anybody at this time of year.

Absolutely. Still wanna see your giant self 'fore we split for MO.

I didn't know you were moving, I haven't really been tracking too straight the last few months, folks could have turned purple and I'm not sure I'd have noticed.

Turkey, ham, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, baked Mac & cheese, sweet potato casserole, crescent rolls, corn on cob, collards, stuffing, deviled eggs, potato salad, gravy, pecan pie, cheesecake, tea, wine, beer, soda, coffee, egg nog. I’m sure I forgot something.
I Love my wifes cooking.

Russian Tea ... instant tea, instant lemonade, Tang orange drink, cinnamon and clove mixture my Mom makes.

The Mac and cheese is baked with a thick layer of extra sharp cheddar cheese on top. It’s put on the top shelf in the oven to get a slight brown almost burnt on the pieces sticking up.
My wife makes the best potato salad. It is requested at every family get together. The deviled eggs are made from our chickens eggs.

One down, one to go.

Cheese ball, and shrimp cocktail for starters.
Baked, smoked ham, acorn squash stuffed with seasoned onions and apples, sweet potatoes, green beans with almonds and crescent rolls.

Traditionally, we have meats in our family. Mainly, roasted beef or pork.

This year we're having whole prime rib. I'm planning to do a reverse sear, then cover with herb butter and roast on high. And of course, with au jus. Also doing lechon pork belly. It's a roasted pork filled with lemongrass, green onions, garlic and bay leaves. Lumpia (Filipino spring rolls), both shanghai (meat only) and vegetable lumpia. Red rice (a staple in Guam). My wife will bake an ube/yema cake. (Ube is a purple yam in the Philippines and yema is like a thick caramel).

I was thinking about having egg nog with rum. Any other ideas for alcohol? Buffalo Trace? Jameson Irish whiskey?
I’m doing my first prime rib - do you have a process that you can direct me too? Or share ?

I'm planning on trying this method, as described in this YouTube video. There is a 500 degree method (not reverse sear). I have tried that in the past. Too much well done areas for my taste.
Good luck!

We always did a ham or turkey, but switched to Schnitzel a few years ago and haven’t looked back. My kids (all adults now) refer to it as the “Christmas Schnitz”. I just made it today, in fact, and will finish it in the oven tomorrow.

(My mom was German.)

Since I already did my meatloaf I had to get something else, so I grabbed a 3lb pork loin for $4.44 at FoodLala just now which I shall slow cook tomorrow with some Saizon Tropicale and pork broth.

I may make a mince pie. Those were a staple in Mom's house when I was growing up. I love it and haven't had one in years. Another of those things my family won't eat.

Freshly baked (or heated for those prebakers) mince pies with double cream poured on. Yummy.

Although the older I get the more I prefer it as a tart, I like scalding hot mince directly on the roof of my mouth apparently.

I meant to go to Lowes and see if they had any, but the amount of people in FoodLala made me come straight home.

Meat cake. 8-1/2 lbs on the smoker at 225. Planning on about 20min/lb to about 120 internal then a quick sear over charcoal. Mmm. [emoji39]

Tonight we’re having our traditional Christmas Eve dinner. Veggie, cheese and summer sausage plate. Some crackers. And my wife’s pizza fondue. it’s a mix of pizza sauce, cheeses and ground sausage melted in a fondue pot. We make homemade pizza crusts to cut up and dip in the fondue.

And usually some red wine to wash it down.

Since it’s pissing rain here in the mountains I’m doing 24 hour sous vide ribs. Then finish them in the smoker tomorrow with some more rub and a nice mop. 76C0756A-46CE-4DEC-B719-72929D409C66.jpeg

Dinner was dirt soup( borscht) with tatters and onions. Then followed by seafood lasagna ( scallops, shrimp, crabmeat with homemade Alfredo sauce. Perogies and homemade garlic bread.

We had our traditional ham, potato salad, shrimp cocktail and pasta salad. Portions were small because there is only two of us this year.
