Anyone got any ideas on how to clean a muzzle brake with a finish like new? I read somewhere that if you soak it in peracitic acid it will literally eat up all that carbon buildup. I feel like that'll eat my FDE finish away on my sig comp though.

A 50:50 ratio of hydrogen peroxide and distilled white vinegar.
The dip.

Creates an extremely hazardous substance. Hopefully you had proper PPE, and also stored/disposed of it properly.

Spent some time with some chemists talking about how to dispose of the dip. They recommend using a pot or pan that you intend to discard, pour the mixture into the pan, heat the contents slowly, do not boil, allow it to evaporate. All of the lead oxides, antimoney, and other stuff will precipitate, but don‘t go sucking up the fumes for fun. Eventually the dry pan can go to recycling or trash.

In solution the lead oxides are quite dangerous because they pass through skin pretty easily. Similarly, if you get a good boil going the vapor will include particles that can be absorbed through your lungs or eyes.

So, outside, disposable pan, low heat, and patience.

There are folks on the internet that suggest adding table salt to the solution to precipitate the metals. This apparently can work some with some heavy metals, but you'll never really know so the solution doesn’t become less dangerous.

BTW, dip will eat steel, either carbon or stainless, given time.

Last thing, when you take things out of dip don’t brush them since that puts everything in the air. Have a second container of water that you use to rinse and brush. That water also goes in the pan.

I think y'all are over thinking it by a wide Margin. If you're that worried pour the residue on a wad of paper towels and when dry, toss in trash. Toss container if your afraid to wash and reuse.

Good gosh it ain't nerve gas.

That works, it just takes a lot of paper towels to soak up a quart of the stuff.

Update:

I soaked my pistol comp and my ultradyne comp in this mixture, and it cleaned it like a charm. Literally eats the carbon build-up right off.

Which Ultradyne comp you have? Do you like it?

Kitty litter. Ground. Toilet. Sink. Evaporated on sunny days on the deck. Pretty much not gonna harm ya unless ya drink it. :)

I think you’ve been playing with this stuff and maybe mercury for longer than is safe.

Y'all worry to much. The McDonald's ya eat daily is more deadly. Shoot and clean and shoot some more....it'll be lots funner for ya without the knee knocking and unnecessary fears. There's always something gonna kill ya, but dirty gun solvent probably ain't it. Down here it's more likely you'd get beat to death for drinking bud light....
