Ive been reading about the grading on the CMP 1911. To me the difference in money seems pretty small.

Has anyone been in a position to compare different graded 1911s?

All of them sound like they could include commercial parts but the range grade sounds like it could be excessive.

Is there an obvious choice? Does anyone have recommendations?

Service Grade $1250
Field Grade $1150
Rack Grade $1050
Range Grade $1100

I got a field grade in round 2, it was a 1944 Remington Rand, no rearsenaling stamps, as far as I can tell the barrel and hammer had been replaced at some point. Finish on it was really good and it shoots quite well. My wife just got her round 3 field grade, it is a RR slide on a 1945 Ithaca frame which is common as armorers would just grab whatever part was on the top of the pile when reassembling these things over the years. No rearsenaling stamps on this one either. Hers is in better condition than mine. Barrel has been replaced but all other parts appear original to the respective manufacturers.

They're all luck of the draw as far as components go but so far not disappointed at all in our two FGs.

There were a number of folks in the first round of 1911 sales that received some very nice field/rack grade specimens! Service grade weren't available in round 2 when I ordered mine, but CMP had some come available when they called, so I spent the extra money. You likely won't be disappointed with either a field or service grade pistol.

Here's an example of what my SG looks like (Ithaca slide, RR frame)

My SG, Ithaca slide, Colt frame, HS barrel. Looks like all period parts, just not all Colt. I've seen nicer SGs but I asked for original finish and that is what I received.
