I'm not a buyer at any price after Steve Cooper (General Manager of the North Store) said this:

“We want a perceived value — more of an heirloom. We don’t want them considered a standard sidearm. All we need is to have someone commit a liquor store robbery with one and then we’ll be held accountable.”

Wow! I didn't know about that... What an idiot...

Yeah, I am not in at that price either. Maybe for a hard core collector. But for that price you can get some very nice new 1911s of known quality.

My father and grandfather were in the Army during Vietnam. They both have told me how inaccurate the old 1911s were. Anyone else hear that?

My pop was in during Vietnam and just mentioned that they were all old and rattled a good bit. Still shot ok, but he never mentioned the accuracy. Being an enlisted man he only drew a pistol when he had to transfer prisoners or something.

I get it, they are cool and have a history, but the comment above where they are applying heirloom prices to surplus goods is a no go.

I was kind of looking forward to one, but I would probably go with a CMP Special in 308 (if those become available again). You pretty much know what you are getting with something like that, and for about the same price as the 1911 Service Grade. There is no "CMP 1911" repository of pictures, etc to draw on (yet).

I guess someone will buy them. Maybe... But it won't be this guy.

Called it! This has been fodder for gun show discussions since they announced they were releasing them. I knew they'd be in the realm of $1,000. They are pretty much priced at full market for mixmaster guns with pitting. You can bet that any gun that is remotely close to nice and/or correct will be auctioned.

Remember when they said initially none of them would be auctioned? I knew that wouldn't be the case.

A little birdie I know has a contact at CMP who sent him some pics of some of their guns in storage bins. Basically unissued in cosmoline. Bet they will go HIGH.

Anywho...I'm out at these prices. Didn't expect to be in to begin with, though. Wait till you see them start popping up in gun shops and at gun shows. Will be interesting to see the asking prices then. LOL

Well, I was definitely going to order one, and I had already talked my dad into ordering one (so I could get it when he dies :) ). But, at these prices I will pass, and I will recommend that he does the same. Maybe I'll buy one at a gun show if I ever get rich... But that's not likely.

I am very disappointed that even the best grade not going to auction will show pitting and still cost $1050. The auctions will take all of the clean guns and they will be pushed into the $2,500+ level but people with more $$$ than brains.

No way I will pay that for one. I use to carry one and sorry I am not paying for the nostalgic value.

I didn't know the charter of CMP was to convey collectors pieces at more than collector value
I guess I misunderstood why CMP exists, I figured these numbers, I can buy a known piece (I can touch or see, no game of chance involved) for less.... sad but I'm definitely out...

Good news is, if you change your mind you will have plenty to chose from on Gunbroker, pretty soon after

I know... Blood sucking flippers... These guys are like ticket scalpers... And the people that buy brand new video game consoles and immediately put them on EBAY for double the price... I hate em....

Really, so if I go rob a store with one they put your dumb *ss in jail? Might be worth $1k just to get you out of your .gov job.

Sorry, I'm cranky. Been working too much today.

Stupid pricing. It’ll be interesting to see one in good-shooter condition get auctioned, especially if it stops around $1,000.

Well the ATI and RIA 1911s have been put at the top of my list now.

You’ll have people that pay that price, others will not. They may sell completely out, may not. But for 1k I can build my own 1911 or buy a couple ATI or RIA ones lol

I hope the auction guns bring sane market prices not this crazy marked up BS. It'll be funny to see the handpicked samples sell for $800-1k. The other guns should be 400-700.

Rack grade: $300, Field grade: $450, Service grade: $600.

I could see justifying the $1,000 for a service grade if it was all original and matching (which would be hard/impossible to prove). The pricing on these is obviously geared towards the collector, not the average person. Personally don't understand paying $1K for one of these when you could get an awesome Kimber for the same price.

Anyone know just how many, total, 1911s are they talking about?

This is the answer to your specific question:

The rumor is that the US Gov has ~100,000 1911s. CMP could get up to 10,000 each year for 10 years.

This is what the CMP website has to say...

While the National Defense Authorization Act granted transfer of a maximum of 10,000 1911s per year to the CMP, the Secretary of the Army allowed only 8,000 1911s to be transferred to the CMP for sale and distribution this fiscal year. Some of those are anticipated to be unusual and worthy of being auctioned. The remaining number will be sold based on a computerized Random Number Generator.

The CMP does not know what next year’s allotment might be.

I am still probably going to put my name into the hat because my father in law was a Marine and served in Vietnam. It would be an awesome gift to give him a 1911A1 with US property marks as a gift.

Nice article with some great pics of the pistols. However, I disagree with the sentence, "The CMP have rolled back the price of 1911s by a decade."

WTH does that even mean? They are way overpriced. The pics they showed of the service grade pistol look great, but it should be selling for $600 not $1050. These are USED guns. And tax dollars have already paid for them when they were manufactured. Now they expect tax payers to pay for them again, at almost double what they are worth.

And I knew that the CMP was going to make it so that nobody could get more than 1 1911 from this batch of 8000, but the article says there will be a lifetime restriction. As though you can only buy 1 ever, even though the CMP is probably going to get a total of 80,000 1911s to sell over the next 10 years.
