Competitive Shooting - Ask Me Anything

Update: I "calibrated" my scale using a plastic 1-liter measuring cup. 1 liter weights 1 kg, by definition, which is 35.204 oz on a 70 degree day. The cup weighed in at 4.5 oz. My gun, without the magwell, came in consistently at 41 oz, plus a little. I did the same on a friend's kitchen scale set to grams, and I got 1179 gr, which is 41.6 oz. It looks like I'm good to go unless the match scale is way off (weigh off? <snicker>).

By the way, with the magwell the weight came in at 42.5 oz on the fish scale, which uses 1/2 oz increments. I think that would cut it too close. The magwell actually makes reloads more difficult with this gun because the bottom of the mag plates are even with the bottom of the magwell, and the mags don't always seat. The double stack mags are easy enough to get into the well without the magwell attached anyway.

Thanks for all the support.

Been a while since I shot some IDPA but check the rule book and see if they go by actual weight or the listed weight by manufacturer for weight. At one point I thought it was manufacturer listed weight but not sure now. Just be worth checking that so you don't get jammed up.

I believe at the sanctioned match in Oxford last fall the guns were actually weighed. Anywho, I found this.

New to competitive shooting? Interested, but don't know where to start? This thread is your safe space to ask any question you like, no matter how trivial it may seem. If I don't know the answer, I'll find someone who does.

Shooter ready? Stand by!
Bit of a thread revive here... (sorry...or you're welcome? :)

About 18 years ago I was a junior member of the Arizona HighPower team. My coach taught me the fundamentals of breathing, trigger control, making wind calls, cartridge reloading, and countless other aspects of the craft (he mostly got me addicted to firearms, that jerk!). Highschool passed in a flash and life changed. Fast forward almost two decades, a wife and 4 kids later and I am now thinking it would be great to try and get back into it. It seems most clubs these days are into the high speed low drag running and gunning competition types (which I am not knocking and hope to one day also take part in), but HighPower still holds a bit of a special place in my heart and I would like to try and find a nearby club/group. Would you possibly know of anyone in the Greensboro or Burlington NC area in this forum that might be willing to have a noob pester them with some questions?

Central Carolina Gun Club

Right there in Burlington. Used to be a founder or board member or something on here.

Do USPSA single stack guns have to be 1911s? Is a sig p220 allowed?

what color vest is best for IDPA?
Being a defensive sport, versus a gamer sport, vests are not required. Cover garments are, however. A lot of guys just yank their shirttail over their gun and mags, which is perfectly legal. Like this.

I’ve watched you boys practice your ballet moves right before a stage. Like ballet practice before the Nutcracker Suite.

Quite impressive.

Reactions: Me.
We’re too tactical for those ballet warm-ups. (Read: Too Old)

There is nothing tactical about IDPA.
Except figuring out how to airgun it without using yer hands.

And, we have two geezer divisions: CO and PCC!

Don't ask which divisions I shoot.

I would like to get into competition shooting in SC but don't know where to start. I'm most interested in PCC, but willing to start anywhere

Whats a "Hit Factor Member Number"? The CGGR two gun match page on Practiscore is asking for it.

I'm a member of Mid Carolina Rifle Club, it's a pretty great club. There's also panteo which I think hosts a few matches, and pinetucky down towards Augusta if you don't mind a little travel.

Are there any high-power rifle matches in WNC? West of Asheville.
If so, where?
Everything I see, is in the eastern part of the state.
Maybe at big ivy in Silas branch? They have a 1000 yard range I believe.

Sooooooo, Flatfender.

He disappeared from competition entirely one day after starting this thread.

Come back, Flatfender. Kid should be practically grown now.

Where are rimfire matches near Nash/Franklin/Johnston Counties?

So who is the new guru running this thread since @FlatFender hasn't been on since February?

Can anyone comment on typical distances for IDPA or USPSA matches? Found some reduced practice targets I can print off at home, would like to gauge my “a zone” speed and accuracy just for fun, but have no idea what distances they’re normally shot at. Local indoor range goes up to 25 yds.
