Bought some LC 5.56 brass converted to 300 BLK. Trimmed to length, but not chamfered.

Decided to try a new Forster 3 way cutter for .308, the converted cases will not fit over the pilot.

Is it normal to have to expand it before chamfering?

Don’t have dies yet, so I’m down for the evening. :-(

How did they trim them? My Dillon trimmer necks the cases down about the same as do my regular dies but does not have an expander plug. I have to go back and size them if I want consistent neck tension but have to run them through the sizing die anyway since the trimmer does not knock out the primers.

I don’t know, but they are deprimed.

Someone will ask, so i’ll measure the pilot in the morning.

They sized and trimmed with a RT1200 or a RT1500 dillon trimmer which does NOT have an expander ball.
That's what it sounds like to me. Trimmed, sized but haven't been expanded. Just a guess though...

So just run it through a sizing die again with the expander, tumble to get rid of the lube, and chamfer?

Try a couple first just to be sure, but that's all it should take.

All that extra work kinda takes the fun out of buying formed brass

Indeed it does. Did 50 of them, tumbling now.

BTW, what length do you trim to? I’m at 1.360.

Although there must be some place that sells it, I do not know where to look to buy brass that is all prepped and ready to load. I prep all my cases, even the brand new commercial cases, the same way each time so I know they are as I want them. If case prep is too much of a chore, loaded ammo is probably the best route to take.

Whoa, save some of that good stuff for the pulpit tomorrow! It isn’t that I mind doing it, just was expecting to chamfer and go.

You bought it and it still needs trimmed?
Send it back? Chamfer I can understand, but it should be all set, length wise??
I think the length is good, but I’m taking it down from 1.360 to 1.355 just to ensure consistency. Using the three way cutter so it doesn’t take any extra time.

Not trying to preach but rather offer practical advice. You said that reloading was not your hobby but a means to your hobby of shooting. I take it to mean that you want the most ammo for the smallest cost with the smallest amount of work. I do the same thing with several chamberings I shoot. Rounds for my AK are very rarely reloads because of the difficulties in getting reloadable cases and because of the availability of fairly inexpensive factory rounds.

The price of factory rounds for 223 seems to be headed down from what it was a short time ago. That makes loading your own less attractive from an economic standpoint and rather unattractive if reloading is considered to be a chore. Crunch some numbers to see whether reloading really is your better option for this round.

You’ve confused me with someone else.

I do agree about being selective about where time is spent. I reload 9mm even though the savings are modest because it’s quick and easy, but I won’t reload 223 for the AR because the savings are only modest and I’m on a single stage for rifle. I’m planning to load for the single shot and bolt rifles.

Starting to the tinker with casting.

My apologies. I must have two different threads confused. Sorry.
No worries, and no offense taken, just joking around a bit at your expense.

Have a great da!
