ever since Kodi I've been tossing around the idea of cancelling our cable. We only watch a handful of channels and now we can pick up the movie channels like hbo, showtime in app version for like $8 or on kodi for free. Well our cable company just sent us a notification saying they might cancel USA & Bravo. ( I only really watch USA & she likes bravo) needless to say, I think I can convince her to get rid of cable all together.

so, in leiu of cable, what have you guys supplemented with? Kodi, Netflix, Hulu?

Is that something you download on Kodi?
It is an app, it downloads onto a firestick or similar android device in the same way kodi does. Live TV, HBO, ect.

Who is your internet provider? We have Charter for internet, tv, and phone. We dropped tv for a while but picked it back up this year since our son showed interest in some children's programs. The difference between tv and no tv is less than $30 month for us. I'd like to drop Charter altogether but we don't have a comparable provider in our area.

We have Charter as well, we pay like $150/mo for internet & tv. We have been tossing the idea around since they sent the notice that they may cancel a bunch of channels. Direct Tv is around here but when I initially called they wanted over $200/mo

That's messed up. We pay $109 for internet, tv, and phone. You're getting hosed by them. Such is why I'd like to cancel them...they're crooks...and their service is average at best.

Exactly, here the tv isn't bad. The internet is excellent, but my grief is that I watch a handful of channels. I just can't justify paying all that money to watch basic television, now they want to cancel the only channels we watch.

Dropped TWC in 2015 and only have them for internet.
Over the air tv channels with an antenna and I have a Firestick w/Kodi.
I'll have to download that app listed above.

I pay $53/mo for the internet, $10 for Netflix.
Bill was $130/mo

I watched the Tour de France this past year, LIVE, using kodi.
You can watch live tv, just depends on what it is I guess.
I'm not real versed in the kodi world though.

I had the same thought, for $150 I can get Hulu, Netflix, HBO Go, STARZ App, a whole bunch of shit for well under $100. Honestly I'll probably cancel Netflix too with Kodi. I only really watch documentaries on Netflix, everything else is on Kodi.

How do you like the antenna? What channels do you get? It's free right?

You should cancel it.

I'm gonna try & convince the Mrs.

My cousins husband calls every year like clock work and bitches and gets lower rates. I can't be bothered, I don't see why everything has to be such a scam.

We tried to add STARZ a few months back because we watch one show on it, they wanted $20! I went online and got the STARZ app for $7.99

Yeah all I've watched "live" was the NYG and UFC ppv. Most times, it works well. But how do you complain when it's free.

I could probably drop the Netflix since you can get so much with kodi

I'm in the Raleigh area, this is what I get:
50.1 WRAZ-HD, 50.2 MeTV, 5.1 WRAL-HD, 5.2 WRAL-SD, 11.1 WTVD-D1, 11.2 WTVD-D2, 11.3 WTVD-D3, 17.1 WNCN-HD, 17.2 WNCN-SD, 17.3 Justice, 22.1 WLFL-HD, 22.2 ASN24/7, 25.x (UNC tv, but I can't get signal on these), 28.1 WRDC-TV, 28.3 CometTV, 34.1 WRAZ,

My wife was really against dropping everything. Once we did she realized how little we actually watched it. We've got a antenna for local channels.

So is mine, to me if I can save $75-100 it's a no brainer. I'm not sure how much they're charging us for tv but I'm sure it's excessive.

I have to assume cable companies and the studios are going to launch a serious crackdown on Kodi (technically, on the way lots of people are using Kodi, since Kodi by itself is fine). It's just too egregious with dozens of ads on every city's Craigslist hawking Firesticks with Kodi and the salespitch of reducing cable tv bills to zero.

It's just ridiculous: http://raleigh.craigslist.org/search/sss?query=kodi

For live TV, Sling seems like a decent option at $25/mo for their Blue bundle + $5-$10/mo for the various add-on bundles.

Yea, I think kodi could go the way of the music download thingy of years ago, Limewire....

I'm not opposed to getting SlingTV and had thought of that for a while.
I'm also not opposed to paying for movies to watch here at home, but not at $25.
I watched Sully the other night for $5 I think....I was home, in my comfy clothes, and had a little popcorn that wasn't $10.

Agreed, although I hope not anytime soon. Here they're charging upwards of $80 for the Amazon firestick w Kodi. $40 just for Kodi?! I feel bad for anyone who buys one

I think if these jack wagons weren't spamming the net with Kodi ads we'd be fine. I'll probably pick up Hulu bc I think they're pretty solid for general tv but I have to try them out.

Cant convince my wife to cut the cable yet. Kodi with the Wullies min build has been really good tho. The browser apps have been getting better every couple of months. Between that and Youtube I dont watch much cable anymore.

Not sure if you like podcasts or not but Joe Rogan has a great one. He just has random people on and they shoot the shit.

Not just Kodi, they're installing some build as well. I realize this isn't rocket science, but for non-tech savvy folks, getting a Firestick all ready to go is appealing. And if they believe this gravy train is going to last, what's $40 compared to months or years of no cable tv bill?

If you have a friend with an account you might 'try' it out that way..

Ill check that out. Does he have a youtube channel?

For me, Netflix is the best value in entertainment. I get about 8 DVDs per month for less than $10 and they have over 100,000 titles. They also have a streaming service, but I only do the DVDs.

I took the money saved and bought her a MacBook Pro. That changed her mind on cutting the cord real fast.

Hahaha you know something she has been complaining hers is getting old. Ours are like 6 years old and still work great. For some things I don't mind paying a little more, Apple computers is one of them

That's true! You an save more than $40 the first month. Hell, I've streamed the last 5 or 6 UFC fights on paperview. That's like $300 savings

If someone is paying $80 for a Firestick with just Kodi with a build they should buy the stick themselves and look at some Youtube videos. Once they are familiar then install the apk files like Mobdro, Movies HD, Megabox, Show Box, etc.(apps to use as well as Kodi). I agree that at some point in time due to the over advertising (Craigslist and Facebook) and people cutting the cord it will draw attention to these streaming apps. However most people are getting tired of the high cable bill. We have satellite. Last year the bill got up to $140. I called to cancel it they lowered it to $107 then they started the spiel of "Do you want free HBO for 6 months?" No "Do you want NFL Sunday Ticket?" No. The trick is if you don't call an cancel at the end of the free promo they start charging you for it. This year the bill went back up to over $150. Called to cancel and they lowered it to $120. This is NO premium channels. If it were up to me, I'd just cancel it and use an OTA antennae and the box. But with young kids that like watching different channels, I haven't. If I had to guess I would say we mainly watch 20 channels, maybe 25. Not worth $75/month to me much less $120. If these companies would allow a la carte packages at a reasonable price then Kodi wouldn't be as popular as it is.

*Edit- Something I read regarding Kodi. Always play (stream), never download. Some apps like Popcorn give you the choice to watch or download.

I will have to look into those "apk files" I only have Kodi. I haven't done much research into further apps since I've been so happy w Kodi thus far

Netflix was ok when we first got it at $8/month. However it soon got to suck because it was mostly older movies. Was going to cancel until they started coming out with original content like Daredevil.

This is what we have, an over-the-air DVR, $50 per year. Works fantastic. Records everything you want from an over the air antenna for you to view later.
