Put this Savage in .223 together yesterday. 30" Shilen barrel. First time doing this. I found a few old rounds that a friend gave me to see whether it would function. Looks like a good start but I'm hoping I can tighten up the group with some handloads. I ordered some powder and primers :eek:. Don't ask!

Good job. I remember the first time i had to fire a Mauser k98 that i built in gunsmithing...i was terrified. Just the barreled action with no stock. Say prayer, cross fingers, pull trigger.

Sweet!

Long range .223 is great. I head space off SMK 69 or 77grn + 0.02" off the o-give. Works every time.

Crazy minds think alike! I just picked up a box of 69's but the only powder I could find "right now" was A 2230 and some #41 primers.

What's the twist rate on that stick?

FYI my redneck setup.

I take a factory match round and set my COAL on my Redding Comp setting die. This way I know I can magazine feed.

Next I load a dud, no powder, no primer this is my go gauge round.

Lastly, I set my Redding +0.02 taller then COAL and set a long dud. This is now my barrel setting round.

For a Savage setup I screw in the barrel loosely, chamber the long dud, screw down the barrel until the long dud makes contact with the rifling, then tighten the barrel nut. Now my head space is +0.02" off the O-Give.

I believe you are off to a good start if that was factory ammo. Nice job sir. Congratulations!

I've got 223 go/nogo gauges if you need to borrow some lmk
I ordered a set a few weeks back. :(

That was some handloads that a friend had dropped off a few years back. It was plinking ammo for an AR. He is meticulous about his loads but I never found it to be very accurate. Not sure what brass to get. I have a bunch of milspec that I got from some SF guys but I may just bite the bullet and get some Lapua if I can find it. If not, I've had good luck with Starline.
@JBoyette
It's a 30 inch Shilen barrel with a 1:12 twist. It had a .222 on it but I wanted to switch barrels just to learn the procedure. Kind of fun. I'm not set up for 700 barrels though, at least not what I have read here and other places. So I'll stick with Remage barrels and such for awhile I guess. Depends on if I can find a cheap beater 110 action. I was thinking .280AI for hunting. Just about as good as a 7mag without all the fanfare. I guess that's why folks "build" their own
