Wife and I are looking to drive out to Colorado this summer to stay a week for our 20th and her birthday. Thinking of what long gun to take for the trunk. I've got 5.56 AR or Pistol, 7.62x39 AR, my only 308 is the SA Socom.

I really want to take the 308, but don't really want to risk such an expensive rifle being stolen, as it will most likely never leave the trunk. It's a "just in case", And I don't think the 556 would be up to the task, nor really the 7.62 x 39.

So, I'm considering buying something less expensive in 308. Options are PSA AR10, Mossberg, Savage, or Ruger Scout rifle, Or a 45/70 lever gun. PTR 91 a distant option.

I don't reload, so the 45/70 is tempting but not really a "good" option at the moment, as it would most likely lead to a realoading press and all that goes with it.

I know I could just take the Socom and file an insurance claim if need be, but If that happened I'd be kind of sick, as I really really like that rifle. Bought it new from Jerek and I've only got @50 rounds through it so far.

Thoughts?

Need to get some bear loads for the 45LC Redhawk...

Any doubt, answer is yes.

Seriously, what threat is there? Human, animal?

For human, pistol or any rifle will do.

For animal, especially out west, bigger is better.

You may be able to pick up a hunting combo rifle, with scope on it, for pretty cheap. 30.06, .308, etc.

A PA10 is never a bad choice either.

Another vote for a PSA AR10 ... they’ll have sales for Tax Day, Washington’s B-Day and so on to get a good deal on. Wel heck right now the have a complete lower for $179.99 and complete upper for $399.99 so for $580 plus FFL charge and shipping (plus magazines) you have it covered.

For a trunk gun for bothersome critters, 2-legged and 4, your AR pistol will do the job just fine.

But if you want a new gun, buy a new gun! You don't need to justify it to us. We're enablers here. :D

If you're trying to rationalize buying a new 30 cal, the PA-10 is so cheap you can't afford NOT to buy it!!
If you're trying to decide which gun to carry for personal self defense on the road, either carbine you have now is a good fit. You don't need a 308 in the trunk. Odds of having to defend yourself at 300+ yards are about the same as being abducted by aliens, and those shorter weapons will be more useful for interstellar CQB.

Thinking I may go with a 12 guage with slugs, just occurred to me that it would probably be the best solution.

Want/need to take a pump and I'm not risking my Van Comp'd 590A1 or the KSG, so I guess I should be shopping for a beater pump gun (LOL..)....

Honestly, I've got the 2 legged stuff covered, but wanted something big enough to stop some of the big critters out West, JUST IN CASE. I believe in being prepared.

As for the PA 10. I sent my buddy a picture of my cart a while back with the upper and lower in it. Total before shipping & transfer $480. Was showing how much will power I had.

Can't afford to shoot the 308 (as I don't reload) so the Socom will have to do for now. However, with what this trip is costing, I'm kinda thinking what's another @$500 (LOL).
