Hey all, I’m applying oil based poly to a new cabinet i built. I had a small container of mineral spirits, but its pretty empty. I thought i was good on mineral spirits as my father in law gave me a 5 gallon can of it a couple years ago. Long story short, im ready to put coat #2 today and went to refill my small can and the entire 5 gallon can evaporated or leaked away!! I’ve got tons of denatured alcohol on hand, cani use alcohol for cleaning brushes with polyurethane? Thanks!

Yes.

I normally use lacquer thinner, but denautured alcohol will work, I have used it in the past myself.

i just dump some thinner in a quart sized paint can (from Lowes) and use that for cleaning brushes.

Oddly enough I have never used mineral spirits for cleaning brushes.

ETA: use only in a well ventilated area..but I am sure you know that!

Cool, thanks! Im curious as to what alcoholism residue left in the brush will do to the poly when i put coat #3 on tomorrow…
THe alcohol will evaporate pretty quick.. clean it really well, and set aside. Itll be dry overnight.
