I'm trying to help my son-in-law with an engine replacement. 2011 Dodge Caliber. Main thing is that I'm looking for a replacement engine that isn't going to blow up in a couple weeks, but I'm not sure where the reliable sellers are.

I found a website called "allusedparts" (https://allusedparts.com/dodge/cali...n=uee23bbc410da119dff5cb931fcd41657&seq_num=3) that has what seem to be really good prices, and claims a 1-year warranty, but I don't know how reliable they are. They have two available in Greensboro with a "local discount" for a really good price. Anyone know about them? Or can anyone suggest a reliable seller in Franklin/Nash/Wake/Johnston/Wilson counties?

Also, anyone know much about replacing a transaxle engine?

Idk if But autozone used to source used parts. the 2 engines I bought had a warranty of some sort Dont remember what it was. They may still have that service available

Replacing a transaxle engine is no different than any other.

Still must separate the engine from the transmission. Some can be tricky because as you've seen here is not much room to spare. The purchase of a Haynes manual for $20.00 is probably worthwhile to avoid any specific issues with that year/model. Some of the engines come out the top, and sometime the bottom.

Label ALL wiring connectors.

@random Prior to December 2017 I could have helped you out. Sorry I can no longer assist our members with stuff like this.

A good install is worth it's weight in gold. Good luck.

Edit: I forgot to mention, whatever choice you make on an engine, whether it be a
remanufactured, rebuilt, or used unit,
call: (800) 827-7455 Ask for Steve Cherry.

He should be able to sell you an Install Kit
that will save you quite a bit of money
and time. The kit also ensures a good
clean install. They used to sell the install
kits separately but that may have changed
since I left the company.

Thanks for the info.

Definitely don't want to spend $2500 on one fairly new, but I also don't want to get one that I can't rely on working for awhile. Anyone have experience buying through salvage parts places, or that car-part site?

I've used pull a part before for that price ranged car. They have a limited warranty on some parts. You can also search facebook marketplace and craigslist for entire parts cars. Find a wrecked one. These cars in junk yards or random engine in a warehouse have a limited "story" as to what lead that car to there. A significant amount of body damage is an excellent sign that atleast the major systems are functional rather than guessing what major part failed to send it to the junk yard. Also with pulling your own it's great practice for when it comes time to pull the engine our of your sons car. Haynes or Chilton manual would be a absolutely must. FWD cars drivetrains are pretty easy if you are relatively handy. They are easier to drop out the bottom but I've taken them out of the top with the engine and transaxle attached. Pretty easy too. Take your time, take pictures and label as much as you can. Especially vaccum hoses. Most of the electronic harnesses are easier than most people think. Really ergonomic and the fittings can usually only be put back where they were disconnected by the nature of the shape of the connectors. Good luck!

You can get alerts from LKQ when one or more makes and models shows up at the yard.

I'll most likely end up having to GET this on my own. I doubt I'll be able to pull it - do any of these places do that for you (obviously for a fee)?
