Hey guys. I am finishing building out an ar for up close and mid range work and am wondering if the benefits of the EOTech are worth the added cost. The rifle isn’t an expensive build but it is a quality build. I run red dots and scopes on my other rifles but I do have a hard time seeing a sharp red dot with my eyes. I am wondering if the EO is worth extra money or if a holosun or something else would be good enough. Thanks for the input

Look through an EO & an Aimpoint in different lighting conditions.
I have a mild astigmatism, the circle and dot flared. Plus the added light washed out the target at low light. I replaced my EO’s with Aimpoints, T1 T2’s.
The battery life on the EO can’t compare to an Aimpoint either.
*edit to add*
If that’s not your budget, I believe there are other good, less expensive options that weren’t available when I bought mine.

I think I will swing a little more on this gun than I have in the past as long as it is worth it.

I agree you need to look through one. Sometimes they just don’t work for your eyes. I think the eotech is generally a little better if you have the stig.

My go rifles wears an Aimpoint. The always on and battery life is more important to me for that use.

My everything else rifle wears an EOTech and magnifier. The reticle and huge FOV make it incredibly fast for me. It works well with the magnifier and the 1moa dot makes it a mid range beast.

My astigmatism varies from dot to dot. Eotechs look ok to my eyes but not any better than some Holosuns.
Are they worth the added cost? I think there are definite pros and cons to the Eotech line. Cons are weight and battery life for sure. Eotech is not out here trying to innovate, just selling the same old stuff and coasting along on brand recognition and past reputation. For the most part they are durable but there have been recent reports of delaminations in the glass. There was also the controversy a couple years back over Eotech's shifting POI when they got hot, like they might if you sat them on a shooting bench in the sun during the summer.
Pros are reticle, (maybe) holographic tech since hardly anyone else has a true holo sight, and wide field of view through the window.
Batteries might be a pro or con for you depending on what you like. I like the 512 because you can take the batteries out of your remote to feed it and it's battery life is over double what the CR123 offers.

Check out the Holosun AEMS. I owned EoTech and the AEMS at the same time, kept the AEMS. I've run the AEMS in several Run n Guns and it's held up very well. Eyebox is great, reticle options make sense and battery life is good. It's also more compact than the EoTech, leaving quite a bit of rail space available.

EOTech is the normal choice. It is the most common I think. AimPoint is solid. If you want to save some money you could look at Holosun. I have several Holosuns three different models. I like the shake awake and the solar. I have had them on guns for years and I have done classes in rain, sleet, mud, bouncing around, mistreatment and they have all just worked. They are made in China. If you want American made stick with Eotech.

I have never, ever used a Holosun, but they have a good rep. If people want to die on the hill of 'made in China,' I assume they are doing that from an American-made cell phone or computer with American-made components; otherwise, you do you. It does not matter to me.

I have never had an issue with an EOTech or Aimpoint, but my eyes now prefer the EOTech over the Aimpoint. Both are old but get the job done. I am sure there are 'better mousetraps' on the market.

I have 2 Holosun 515s and love them. They both have the 'eotech reticule' but battery life that's still measured in years not hours. The AEMS seems like a great option as well if you want/need a larger fov.

I also really like eotechs though, best option is to get behind one of each if you're able to.

If you have NV, I hear Eotech is the undisputed king.

I gave up my eotechs. It was nice to not have to replace batteries every time i went shooting.
eotech is THE line to aspire to. they know it, their marketing dept knows it. the brand is justification for the price.
that being said, they do make good products if you are willing to overlook the price and battery thing.

But personally, I like being able to order batteries after a couple years instead of needing to keep a stock on hand at all times. Getting 2-3 sights for the price of one eotech is also nice. I live on romeo 5/7, a handful of trash brands on 22lr guns. I have a couple higher end sights on a few rifles here and there. If I want the nostalgia of worrying about battery life and having to turn my optic on, I'll break out the old vortex sights i still have here and there.

Holographics and red dots are truly apples to oranges. I’m an eotech fan but that’s mostly because they work tremendously well with or without magnification. Red dots just don’t provide the light transmission and reticle clarity under 3x magnification. If there is no plan to run a magnifier, I’d just go with one of the many red dot options that will have much better battery life.

I have and love my Eotech XPS2 but it really is dated technology.
I have an astigmatism as well and I have found a green circle found on many Holosun products is the best for me.
Same for me re the Holosun products. Much better for my eyes than the Eotech.

Having said that, my impression is that the Eotech is a higher quality product. But this doesn’t make much difference if the reticle is fuzzy due to an astigmatism.

I have a Sig 4xt-pro and love it. I have the main dot dialed in for 100y under my 3x magnifier, then the bottom dot to the area between it and the ballistic circle is dead on for up close 10y under no magnification.

I picked up a exps 3-1 with the single dot with no circle and it is very clear behind a 3x g33.

I prefer the Holosun hs510c green reticle, great optic and great FOV, AEMS/AEMS Core are also great options
