I'm looking for a decent hollow point for defense. I'm wanting to put some up. I have read that the older federal hi-shok is a decent round and it's cheap at $15 for 50 online. Would you use it? I normally use Hornady critical duty but it's $23 a box local for 25. Just wanting a round that will work to get a decent stash of. Thanks

@Wahoo95 has posted some great opinions about 9mm self-defense ammo options in the past. If I remember correctly he mentioned that Federal Hi Shok was a decent defense round but there were some better options out there for the dollar.

I've seen this Federal Hi-Shok advertised quite a bit on my Target Sports USA weekly ads and wanted to try some myself but I keep remembering what Wahoo95 had said about it. Maybe he'll chime in when he gets on here.

That Hi-Shok is old technology but I'm sure it'll still work fine with proper shot placement. At that price it's not bad for stash ammo. It's the same bullet used in the old Federal 9BPLE which was ammo of house for many departments nationwide back during the 90's. If memory serves me correct, I believe it had great real world results, though that LE load did push it past 1300fps. The bullet was known for fragmenting much like 125gr 357mag at that velocity That was back in the days of "Light and Fast" was best for ammo choices.

I have a bunch of old Remington 115gr JHP which is also old technology but I wouldn't feel ill equipped if it came down to using it.

I still carry a bunch of Hydro-Shock in some magazines and in a few revolvers. I like the Hornady SD loads but really do not think that the AVERAGE person getting shot with the Hydro-Shock or the Hornady SD would know that much of a difference.
I bought a couple hundred older Hornady XTP 9 mm bullets and loaded them. They are my second or third rounds of reloads and feel that they would do the job if called to do so. All first rounds are factory loads.

Georgia Arms 9mm ammo with "Speer Bonded Hollowpoint" or similar name is actually Speer Gold Dots and can be had very economically in 50rd quantities. At least the GA man on the phone states they are the same as GDs. The reasoning is that they could not sell them as gold dots at that low a price due to pricing agreements. It's been a few years, don't know if that's true or not currently.

I can't speak on the hi shock but a few years ago I did some testing with various hollow points. I was using a 45 so I can't say exactly how the 9mm would work but the 45 results were good. I picked up a 100rd box of Remington UMC JHP and they did everything they were suppose to do and even expanded well. I could pull the info of when I measured them but somewhere around 0.75-0.80" sticks in my head. Going from .45 to .75 is a reasonable improvement and being able to purchase them for about $0.40/rd it's cheaper then most SD ammo. It wasn't the best and it wouldn't be my top pick but I wouldn't be afraid to use it either.
They make the same round in 9mm and if I can get some I'll test them the same way if people are interested.

Honestly though...why bother? You can get 124gr+p Federal HSTs for about $20 per 50.

$18.50 at Outdoor Limited.

I forget to look at outdoors.... Lol they do have awesome prices! Looks like I will be going with the HSTs or the Hydra shock when I get the $$. Thanks guys!

There are three variations of the old115gr JHP Federal Hi-Shok. The first is the original 9BP 115 @1,180fps, the XM9001, 115 @1,225 and the 9BPLE 115 @1,300fps
The 9BP is the std commercial load, the M9001 is an LE load(at one time the RCMP std issue) and the 9BPLE is of course the LE +P+ load...All are easily enough found and priced competitively.
