Was kinda surprised to see this guy out pokin around this morning on my way to the creek bot. I'd have thunkit too cold for them to get around much. So much for that theory.
Still, seemed like a polite Gent so we parted company on good terms.. 😁

Beautiful copperhead.

damn I hate to see that. My brother in law and I are demoing some old pack houses this weekend. I was hoping it would still be cold enough we wouldn't have to worry about those freaking things but I guess that's not the case.

Looks to be a fairly large timber. Thanks for letting it go. You aren’t food and it doesn’t want to bite something as big as us.

If we hadn’t been talking about rattlers at last months CFF lunch this never would have happened 😂

@HawgBonz

That's a fat canebrake and it was out today?
It’s not uncommon at all to see them sunning this time of year. They’ll be a little slower but they’ll come out and sun. Friend of mine found a couple racers last week

Yes. I was a bit surprised how well he was moving. It was fairly chilly and windy.
I reckon he was just catchin some rays. 😎

Sun tanning! 😎
Ugh, I would have thought he'd still be in brumation right now.

Jan and Feb are my favorite months to walk in the woods because of that.

It’s also illegal to harass, kill, possess parts of them.
It’s also not ok for him to give us a heart attack sneaking around like that!!

All kidding aside I tend to leave them alone, being as I don’t like a no shoulders very much. My problem is my dumb dogs like to harass them and then I end up having to get involved. My border collie is mean as hell to a snake. He is my buddy and very protective but he is NOT socially acceptable

One time we were out RV’ing at a beach campground and coiled up on a rock along the path to the beach was a giant snake, just sunning on the rock, not bothering or bothered by anybody. My friend, however, who is deathly afraid of them, well, I never knew he could run that fast.

All I can say is that in my lifetime of woods tramping I've never seen the aggression from a rattlesnake like ya see in the movies outside of just coiling up and rattling. I imagine that "in their eyes" we're just big, clumsy beasts and the coiling/rattling is their version of "Hey Fatboy, how bout not steppin on me?" 😁😁
I have never felt threatened by them. 🪱🤠👍

I'm an awful person when it comes to these. I def leave them alone in the wild, however....

There was a copperhead in the backyard last year. It just might have met his demise with a shovel. And yeah, I know there are good for rodents etc etc.
