Finally got around to making my fire pit today. All the rocks were gathered by my deceased BIL, I just had to get them assembled. May do some rearranging but for now I'm calling it good. Roughly 8' in Dia.

Very nice! I like it!

We are going to have to purchase rocks to build our pit down here.. Nothing to be found natural for many miles.

You can come dig in my yard for free. I've got some the size of a smart car !

Nice. Looks like it's time to light a fire and crack a cold in honor of your BIL.

Looks great! Now you just need a nice cool evening to light her up.

Okay, need to ask..
Is it a myth that rocks will explode if you use them in a fire pit? I have always "heard" that you should use them.

If you get rocks that have a high water content it can happen.
When I was a boy scout ( way back when you could do real $hit) we set up camp beside a creek. Just 5 kids 12-14 year old guys. The creek rocks were easy to get so that is what we used as our safety ring. We started a roaring fire to show how how bad a$$ we were. About 10-15 min in and the wet rocks started to steam and bust. Not like "Run or you will die!!" but for 13 year old kids it was scary.
So yes they can explode-ish.

It's not just moisture content. The fire heats only one side of the rock while the other side stays relatively cool. The differing thermal expansion causes the rock to split, sometimes violently. That's also why popouts happen when you heat concrete with a rosebud.
