I have been looking for a charcoal grill , anyone able to give me insight on Weber, PK, and chargriller grills?

Hard to beat a Weber original kettle. With a little patience you can do all kinds of stuff with it

Weber Kettle. They’re not cheap, but not outrageous either. Good quality. Can control heat via the top and bottom vents. Fairly large but designed to do either direct or indirect heating. Decent quality materials.

22” or 26” Kettle?
The 26” ones are hard to find and are expensive. Get the 22”, you’ll be happy with the money saved and you can still do a ton of different stuff with it

26” This one right here.

I’m sorry. I misspoke. 22”. I had to walk out and measure mine

Check fb marketplace local to you OP, you can usually find a couple there for about half price of a new one that just need a cleaning

Weber Kettle. And CFF members will share all that you need to know in making it perform like a champ...........all the time.

A Weber kettle will do anything that you want.

I agree with the 147 recommendations for a Full sized Weber kettle!

You can cook multiple ways and enjoy years of good food with one.

Now, let's talk about Lump Charcoal and Briquetts - a whole new topic for variety of methods.😋

Webber Kettle. ...But, I’ve had a couple and the ash container on the bottom is a nice feature so make sure to consider that one.
Yep. I gave away a perfectly nice 10 year old Weber to get one with that clean out pot underneath

Team Weber kettle! (Got one from my local walmart a month or 2 ago on sale for $55 brand new!)

Love it

Made smoke ribs for my parents for the first time and they love it! (They have never had anything smoked since they're from Vietnam)

i see that a new one is not very expensive. What about a dirt cheap one with no ash bucket and no lid thermometer?

Go with the Weber not a knockoff. The kettle shape does matter. I have the basic one with the ash tray not pot and no thermometer. Every couple of years I replace the grills but the kettle is going strong 10+ years now.

Ash tray vs Ash bucket, bucket makes for easier clean up and ash disposal. Also helps to contain a wayward spark. The lid thermometer is not really necessary, in my opinion. The temperature at the lid won't be the same as at the cooking surface.

Webers are almost like an AR, nearly every part is available if you need a replacement. You can also add the ash bucket later if you want. I do like the ash bucket but there is not a thing wrong with the entry level Weber, it will do you a fine job.

I've got a friend who has Big Green Egg. The main selling point of those or the clones is the shape and the ceramic construction allow for a very high temp when desired for searing, like >700°. I will say be cooks some mighty fine steaks on that thing. May not be as good for smoking though, although he did a Boston butt on it that was awesome.

If I was to get a Kamado style I would have to get an Akorn by chargriller - that’s more in my budget! My uncle let me test out his Weber so my question is - is it safe to grill charcoal on a screened in porch?

Watching my Weber when it was in the charcoal getting ready stage, I saw it putting out little embers out the bottom, but probably not hot / big enough to be a danger. The risk with a charcoal grill is it rotting out and dumping the load on a combustible surface. Also, depending on how you light it, it’s likely going to create a lot of smoke when you start the charcoal.

Probably not recommended on a porch or any relatively enclosed area. I started with a Weber and moved to an Akorn which I enjoyed. I now have a Primo XL Kamado which I absolutely love. I actually still have a couple Weber’s, the Akorn and a Weber natural gas. You can definitely do everything on the Weber kettle as most other grills, it’s just not as efficient so it uses more charcoal which is harder for longer cooks.

I took the kettle to the open front porch, got some New York strips and royal oak hardwood lump, cooked them indirect the best I could then seared them on the hot side. My cheap instant thermometer is on its last leg so I was worried they might be over cooked but turned out pretty tasty. I’m gonna have to get my own now

Uh... Weber. Even when I succumbed to the convience of propane, I went Weber.

Ive had more then a few Webers over the years, they work well but were on the fragile side and rust prone. Then back about 3 years ago, the Wifey gave me this one.. This thing is awesome, its bigger then kettle when you need the extra space for grilling direct first then indirect. The charcoal tray is height adjustable and just lifts out for a hose down to clean. The upper rack, I just threw away just because it annoyed me. It even makes a good smoker for ribs or a butt even it it a bit of a fuel hog due to its thin construction. So, I'm voting Char Griller.

I’ve seen these at Lowe’s Home Improvement and a friend told me his family has been using one for decades.....but when he got a new grill he got a 22” kettle😂
