Ok. I'm just looking into a fishing kayak. Just have a few questions. Max budget would be $500. Seems there are alotthat are around 10ft. Is this a decent size for lake shores? Are there any brands I should look at or brands I should stay away from?

A guy I work with has several and he recommended this one for a good starter.

Any tips or good vids that would help out a beginner? Thanks

Not sure of your body size. But I wouldn’t get in a 10ft boat. I’d start at 12 and go up. Short ones are like paddling a bathtub around on long paddles and don’t handle, track, gain speed like a longer one.

Weight capacity is a huge concern along with a comfortable seat if you’re planning on being in it for any extended period. I’ve got a Jackson Big Rig and the seat is awesome. I can be in it for 12 hours at a time and still feel fine. Those cheap kayaks tend to be less stable, harder to paddle, and not as comfortable.

As far as weight capacity add 100lbs to your weight. Length wise is personal preference as to how much room you need. Organization is key since you can’t just get up and walk around to get what you need. Everything needs to be easily accessible from your seat. At your price range the best bet is to find a used one on Craigslist or NCangler.com. A older Native might be a good bet. If you want to paddle my Big Rig let me know and we’ll setup a time.

For lake fishing, size is not an issue. You can go bigger and more stable if you can haul/move it. I have an 11'. I'm 6"1" and it's plenty stable and pretty fast. Mine has kind of a double keel so it's really stable. But the seat is pretty much non existent. If I used it more I would figure something out. I need to drag it out and fish some soon. It's getting that time of year.

Now, for small creeks a short boat is a lot easier to deal with.

If you are on Facebook check out the Marketplace. I've seen a lot of boats on there.

My girlfriend fishes out of one very similar to the first one linked. Hers is open in the front instead of a hatch. She likes it, but she’s also only 5’3”. I’m 6’3” and wouldn’t dare getting into a kayak that size. I fish a big rig now, but started on sun dolphin journey 12. It was great for floating down the river, and my buddy used it at fort fisher last year. The seat in boats like that really suck, and I couldn’t stand more than about two hours at a time. I would look at some of the ascend kayaks, and pelican. They have a lot of options in your budget. If possible I would get one with a seat that has a supportive back. Your more than welcome to try my big rig, and my girlfriends 10’ boat, or the sun dolphin and see if it helps.

I spent four glorious hours today in an Ascend 12T that I bought at Bass Pro for $650, less my 10% veteran's discount. I only started kayak fishing a couple of months ago, and I love it. I'm 5-8, 150 pounds. I can stand up in mine, and though it's wobbly, I haven't gone overboard yet. I even was able to stand up and retrieve a lure I caught in a bush. There's plenty of room for everything I need.

Bass Pro sells a set of wheels for $54, the ones that look like a football goalpost with uprights that stick through the scupper holes. I found them to be pretty useless because they don't stand up by themselves, and I could not lift the kayak onto the wheels while holding the wheels so the posts will go into the scupper holes. And if you have two men, then why do you need the wheels? I bought a nicer (and yet, less expensive) set of wheels on eBay. They work but I've got to buy a couple of rubber bungees to strap them on.

My dad has one like that but I think his has the molded in seats, without the extra support. He hasn’t had any issues with it at all, and two people can easily use it. If you can put a seat in the center you should be good to go.

I bought a perception pescador 10ft the other day from academy. It was the last year's model that has 2 hull hatchs so I got it for $400. Haven't gotten to take it out yet because of work but I have made a small table that will hold 2 rod holders and a small fish finder. All the reviews were good so I hope it serves me well as my first kayak :)

I’m planning on going out tomorrow morning if anyone wants to hit any of the local triad area lakes. I’m not dead set on any one in particular right now.

Mounted a fish finder and 2 rod holders in the front on a custom pvc table? Held on by 2 bungee cords and industrial Velcro.

And please ignore the mess of a building....
