I’m getting a lot of pan flashing in my pedersoli frontier flintlock. Thinking about drilling out the touch hole. Any experience with this. I’m haveing the same problem with commercial and homemade powder.

Is this a new or used gun? Amount of priming powder, placement of priming powder in the pan and type of flint all have an effect. Pics of your lock would help. Drilling out a flash channel is a last resort.

One other question- are you using a substitute for the main charge. Subs are notoriously hard to ignite in a flintlock.

Thanks for the reply, I will grab photos when I get home today. It was a brand new gun. The flint is black English from track of the wolf. I was using real BP, shuzten 3fg.

My pan flashed 100%.
Were you using real black for the main charge? Did you clear the flash channel before firing? Many black powder guns, if stored long term in a vertical position have clogged flash channels due to oil migrating down to that area and congealing in the channel.

Post some pics and pm me I'll try to help.

brand new gun - how many times did it work properly before this problem surfaced?
I suspect fouling and/or blocked touch hole. Could be something else but start there.
I wouldn't drill it although a small drill bit might be useful to help clear the hole. I use Acetelyne torch tip cleaners.

Make sure the gun is empty and thoroughly clean. Catfish's suggestion of torch tip cleaners works great.

Here's a very interesting link on flintlock function
