My 5 year old grandson is showing a big interest in bows, I need some advice on what eguip I need to look at to get him started shooting. All opinions are appreciated but prefer opinions with experience. Thanks in advance

Go inexpensive. Started to say cheap but opted not to. 5 is fine for starting out.but until you see it will hold his interest for more than 2 seconds no need to drop a lot of coin on it.

I would say start with a recurve. Yes they do make youth compounds but I think that might be a bit much for a 5 year old. If you get something he can grow into it's gonna be too big now and if you get something that fits today it won't tomorrow. Just my 2 cents worth.

I remember buying my boy a Little Bear bow years back … nice inexpensive setup with 3 arrows for under $20. Then a week or so later buying arrows to replace the ones he lost or broke for another $20 which were also lost or damaged in a week or so …

When our boys were little, we bought them some cheap compound bows. They were so bad that you could not hit anything with them just a few feet away and ended up taking them back. When they got a little bigger we bought them PSE youth bows which were a world different.

I would make sure he enjoys it and wants to stick with it before spending much money on gear.

The Matthews Genesis bows have low draw weight, no draw length, and not too expensive. If you have an Archery in Schools program they also use these bows. Looking into a used one might work too.

At 5 I wouldn't step up into anything more serious unless he gets serious. IIRC my youngest daughter started shooting around 8 or so. She got a hand me down bow I bought used for my older daughter after I upgraded her bow. Also, a more serious bow will have a specific draw length. At his age he might not be tall enough to even fit into a more serious bow.

If you go recurve pay attention to draw weight. It's about all that's going to matter at that age.
