Michael Slager, the white former police officer who was filmed killing an unarmed black man in North Charleston, S.C., has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. In sentencing Slager, who pleaded guilty earlier this year to a federal civil rights violation, the judge ruled Thursday that he committed second-degree murder and obstruction of justice.

Slager, 36, "acted out of malice and and forethought, shooting dead an unarmed and fleeing Walter Scott," U.S. District Judge David Norton told the court Thursday after several days of testimony, according to the Charleston Post and Courier. "Slager's actions were disproportional to Scott's misconduct."

He just wanted to go home at the end of his shift.

Badge or no badge, pisspoor decisions regarding the use of firearms should be punished accordingly. As soon as dude turned and ran, chase him on foot or just let him go. Shooting a man in the back is just cold-blooded murder.

Slager...the white OJ. I usually hate this kind of crap, but for once the feds got involved and got it right.

The douchenozzle should have to be in GenPop. Unfortunately he'll probably be in some sort of protective custody.

Yet here we are discussing his sentence for a civil rights violation not his act of murder, tried in a state court, and the same sort of sentence you or I might get for blatant murder.

The bright side is (correct me please if I am wrong) that federal prisoners do pretty much every minute of their sentence. His punishment isn't near enough.

I don't know how I feel on this one. The Judge says he is guilty of second degree murder? Wasn't he tried in state court and found not guilty of murder? He was facing Fed charges of Civil Rights violations, not murder, Right.

Personally I don't think it was a good shoot, but, When you get pulled over by the police, and you have a warrant for your arrest, instead of taking it like a man and just facing the court system, you decide to fight the police and then run, you hold alot of the personal responsibility of what happens to you.

Cops have no more right to shoot an attacker in the back after breaking contact than you or I. This whole case is BS.

If he had just murdered someone and was fleeing I think cops can shoot to stop them. But, this guy was wanted on child support charges, not something to kill someone over.

He should have got life. One of us would have.

Any bets on whether the outcome would have been vastly different in the absence of video proof of his crime?

At least justice was served.

May his first prolapse be violent and bloody.

They give regular folks way less than 20 years for murder all the time. My son just arrested a guy last week who was out on parole for the 2001 execution style murder of a police officer in CA.

I don't doubt you one bit. Just proves how screwed up the system is.

Criminal Justice System. So disappointing. They serve months not years, some cities like SF give two for one while you are waiting trial,
that dude in SF will get sentenced to time served, then off to Club Fed. Plea deals and parole, offend again and again a revolving door.

If the punishment fit the crime, we wouldn't need background checks, as there would be few dangerous criminals walking amongst us. I say if you're too dangerous to buy a gun, you're too dangerous to be let out into society. If only there were a continent where we could send all of them.

What if he is armed?

If he is armed yet ceases to be a threat, no. A broad answer to a broad question. There are scenarios where a shot in the back may be justified.

Apparently my opinion is way off though. As evidenced by the incidents of police officers acting as judge, jury and executioner and getting away with it.

Can you or I shoot someone in the back after they have ceased to be a threat?

Lol okay, I’m not playing this game. You handle an armed person however you like but you play for the court room, I’ll play to live

I disagreed with this one when details (and video) were first released.

If I escalate a situation, I should not be able to deescalate that situation and immediately expect you to honor my deescalation. The situation should be handled in an escalated state until the situation is neutralized.

For example... If we are in the grocery store, I grab your wife's ass, punch you in the face and shout "nevermind!"... then turn to walk away...
Do you say "aw shucks, I guess he gets away with it this time"...
Or do you sock me in the side of the head and detain me until police arrive?

The bad guy ran, the cop did the right thing by chasing him... The bad guy assaulted the cop when the cop caught him, the cop did the right thing by utilizing his in attempts to control the criminal with non-lethal force... When the bad guy fought back harder, attempting to gain control of the taser and/or pistol the cop did the right thing by shooting him... It shouldn't matter that the criminal's attempt to kill the cop failed 1.2 seconds before the cop shot him, the criminal escalated the situation to a life and death conflict.

Where does the whole planting of evidence and false statement enter in to your blameless continuum?

You would do well to get him before he completely turns and is away from you and not have it appear as though you went after him and retaliated instead of merely defending yourself.

I believe I mentioned previously that a shot in the back may at certain times be justifiable.

Just not in this case of a murdering cop. He was pissed off that the guy got away, and when he was no longer a threat, shot him anyway. Try to justify it all you want, but for once the federal government got involved and got it right. I'm just curious why that knucklehead out in Arizona isn't facing civil rights charges from Uncle Sugar.

Straight white males don't have civil Rights, just all the Privilege.

C'mon man.... it's like the theme of 2016-2017.
