I figured the folks on the reloading board might know more about ammo than most, so I have a question.

I had the good fortune to be gifted 500 round 9mm luger 135 gr HP new. In the writeup online, Freedom Munitions indicates it is not suggested for self defense or law enforcement purposes. They seems to describe it as a round optimized for competition.

I am confused about why or how one would create a hollow point round which is not optimized for home defense, and why one would want a hollow point round optimized for shooting steel and cardboard in various forms of competition.

I could not find more about it on line. I would welcome anyone here who would be so kind as to educate me a bit about why this round would not be preferred for self-defense or law enforcement purposes, and why it might be preferred for competition? Thanks! Dan

Because hollow point are 'flat' on the front and allegedly make a bigger consistent hole as they rip away the paper/backer instead of needle through it. I gave up on using them for any advantage because they don't feed as well as round nose. If I'm not hitting the a-zone, a millimeter advantage isn't if I have a failure to feed.

I believe, generally, a hollow point provides a more consistent bullet due to the nature of its manufacturing process, compared to FMJ. Something about the striking of the hollow point forms the rest of the bullet fully and the cupped jacket, IIRC.
But, unless the hollow point is engineered for controlled expansion at the velocities to be used, following the FBI guidelines for penetration, it will make a suboptimal defensive round.
