I have decided to build a 11.5 inch short barrel rifle i think. The gun shop I’m using is going to take care of everything for $40 plus tax stamp. I think an 11.5” is what i want in a 5.56 and i have decided against a 300 blk. They told me it was running around 3-4 weeks right now on form 1’s, any truth to that?
If i do the 11.5” upper i can’t go any shorter on a upper with thwt lower right? But can go longer i know that
Thanks for any help
All he needs today he said it my lower i am using and what leghnt barrel i am using and i assume caliber which i read online to say 223 and not 5.56

The lower is the SBR, you can stick any upper you want on it after it's got a stamp. My base config for mine was a 4" 22lr, but I've got 300 and 9mm uppers for it.

@BigWaylon is a font of wisdom about this nonsensical Fed gibberish he can clue you in better than I can.

Thanks
I’m not sure i’ll ever go shorter than 11.5 but never know.
If this works out good i may do an Aero epc 9mm sbr with a 11” barrel. And maybe i’ll get a suppressor one day but for now the up to a year wait time i don’t like

Curious - why are you paying a shop to file your Form 1? Following the instructions posted by @BigWaylon , the process of very simple.

Side note - it’s been a while, but 3-4wks to approval sounds about right.

Thanks

No guarantees, but most wait times are a bit shorter. If I could give you any advice at all, it’s “do it and do it now” and if you can swing it, don’t file for just one can…get two. Every day of not having one or more in the queue could have been one day closer to getting approved.

Additionally, good choice on the SBR barrel length….you’ll love it. I have a couple 10.3 rigs and couldn’t be happier…but you know what makes those short rigs even better?

A can mounted to the end of the barrel.👍

If you’re ever in/around the W-S/Clemmons/Lexington area and wanna shoot a short rig unsuppressed/suppressed to hear the difference, lemme know.

and I’ll second what others have said…do the Form 1 yourself. @BigWaylon is going to be one of your best resources on here and there are others who’ve filed plenty-o-forms, so if you run into a snag/have questions, there’s a lot of help available to you…free of charge.

I would rather pay someone else $40 for my first time. I may do the epc9 sbr myself though
Guys that owns the gun store said in his opinion he thinks 11.5 is the shortest he would go for a 556 sbr.

Everybody is entitled to their wrong opinion. 😎

😳😳

My form 1 I submitted on 11/7/23, got approved on 11/20/23, individual file not a trust. Currently have 3 cans in jail, i spaced them out over the course of 3 months as an experiment to see if they “batch” process all three. I m not sure if its an addiction but i decided to buy cans for guns I plan on building vs buying a can on the backend. If you are looking for cans check out expert voice. Killer deals on great cans. I also paid the 40$ fee but my shop just took that fee and used it for all my NFA items.

yesterday has been one week since the ATF took $200 out of my bank. Be nice to get it in 2-3 more weeks.. I’m gonna do a can of eventually probably start out with the 22 just hard for me to be patient and wait up to a year to get it

Yeah its hard and frustrating to wait. My first can is a 762 RC2 and i just got it so when i am waiting on my more cal specific cans i can use this on everything I own, while not the most efficient its a ton better then no can at all

Hopefully you’ll get it back by end of feb. on another note i am thinking about doing a 13.7 sbr next and putting on a set of fixed sights with my a2 stocked lower

Hopefully you’ll get it back by end of feb…

Most all of the preliminary work is done…finished the receiver/mag tube, new mag spring/follower, new stock. Have the sights in hand for install. All that’s left is engraving, choppy chop (going with 12.5”), sight install and range visit.

I assume i don’t have to engrave anything on my sbr since i gave atf the serial number?
I believe it still has to be engraved with your name (or name of your trust), city and state, as you are considered the “maker”.

Correct. The relevant law is 27 C.F.R. § 479.102. It's a mess to parse and read unless you're a lawyer (and I am not), but basically says that it needs to be identified with certain markings, including serial number, model, caliber or gauge, manufacturer info (in the case of a conversion from an existing firearm), maker's name (individual or trust) of the Form 1 firearm, and location where 'made'. The existing S/N, model, manufacturer, caliber/gauge are usually put on the firearm by the manufacturer, but the maker information is either the individual or trust who submitted the Form 1.

Prior to late 2022 (I think), the maker markings could be done on the barrel or (in the case of an AR15-type SBR) upper receiver, but they now are supposed to be on the serial numbered receiver or lower.

you should ask that fancy gun shop of yours that charged you $40 to fill out a couple forms if that price includes the required NFA engraving...

In the future, look in to filing via eforms and doing it yourself from home in your jammies with your feet up and a good drink in hand. for free (except the $200). and if you invest the few bucks in an .eft file, you can upload your fingerprints without having to do fingerprint cards.

I guess it's possible that you'll be the guy who only ever gets 1 sbr and 2 suppressors... (giggle) but you'll either need a lot more willpower than most of us.
