I've got a pile of pickups from the range with misc headstamps. I've only ever loaded for my bolt gun. Sorting headstamps is a thing I do for rifle, but it's my understanding that for pistol it's not necessary. I did it anyway because I have a feeling that some brass just might not be worth the trouble to reload due to tight primer pockets or perhaps someone knows that specific manufacturer brass is weak, brittle , thin etc and should be avoided. Advice?

I've got these headstamps

What are you loading?

I think I’ve loaded nearly all of those in some form or another and not had an issue.

9mm

Double check the Maxxtech for a inner rim or stepped case in the brass which lowers the case volume. It can effect pressures. I chuck those. Everything else looks good. IMHO

I've had no problems with mixed 9MM brass. With 45ACP I've had problems seating primers in S&B brass....

The first 9mm MaxxTech I saw were stepped cases, but I think they have changed back to regular cases.

Some people don’t like RP (Remington, not Ruger btw) because some calibers have thin walls, particularly in 38/357 I believe.

S&B is good brass, but not much of a chamfer on the primer pockets, so they may not seat primers as easily as other headstamps.

The WMA headstamps typically have crimped primer pockets, so the crimps need to be reamed or swaged.

The WMA headstamps typically have crimped primer pockets, so the crimps need to be reamed or swaged. I put the swage tool into the pocket and it spins freely without cutting. All marked 17 or 20.

Thanks for all the informaton, very helpful.

@Toprudder

Need to revise my comment. I think some of the WMA was previously reloaded. I've found some crimps!

WMA is frequently if not always crimped, usually takes a primer anyway.

S&B is sometimes brass washed steel, it will stick to a magnet and turn pink if wet tumbled. Loads fine at least once.

Blazer is thin, but lasts well, great for "oversized" cast bullets.

CBC is thick or hard or something, frequently fails gauge gets worse as dia and/or length of bullet increases.

GFL I frequently find expanded where the sizer doesn't reach.

All that said, except sometimes for load dev and my longest cast bullets I don't sort, I let the case gauge catch them.
