My girlfriends car makes this weird ass sound, almost only when accelerating. But not always when accelerating. It sounds like a rattling of a thin metal?

Doesn’t sound like it’s the engine, but perhaps something with the exhaust/catalytic converter? Idk. I’m not a mechanic.

Any insight appreciated. It’s a POS 2009 Nissan rogue if that helps.

Thanks.

Loose/bad transmission mount? It will cause a clunking sound when accelerating. Got that going on with my truck right now.

Does it happen only around a particular RPM as it goes through the gears? Possibly something loose vibrating at particular frequencies?

No it doesn’t sound that major. No clunking.

I’d have to check if it’s at certain rpm’s. Not sure.

Sounds like an exhaust heat shield vibrating, more or less.
That’s what I thought. Maybe rip it off and see if it goes away. Didn’t do it when I looked under/in neutral.

Thanks

Don’t remove the heat shield, unless you really want car-b-que for lunch.

Sounds Like you’re already on the path - look for anything loose (probably on the exhaust). Sometimes it could be something internal (like converter guts or muffler baffle), but usually a heat shield like everyone has said. Tap on stuff with your hand (when not hot) and see if you can get it to make the noise.
Heat shield on the converter, or there could be heat shield on the exhaust manifold at the engine too.
Like someone mentioned above, if it’s a loose heat shield, you can put a big metal hose clamp around it to compress it. I’ve don’t that on both converters and exhaust manifolds. You can string multiple clamps together to make a longer clamp if needed (unscrew the clamps all the way, and feed the threaded part of one clamp into the screw of the next.)

Don't forget to also check on the exhaust manifold itself....some will have a bolt on shield that will crack....starter is another place to look that is often passed up.

Nissan CVT transmissions make all kind of weird noises when they start dying. almost like a power steering pump sucking air. Hard to tell in the vid. Is the check engine light on?

If you and your girlfriend were old like me, you wouldn't hear anything. My wife complains about high pitched noises all the time, I never hear a thing.

I know, I'm a lot of help.
My wife has to tell me about approaching sirens.
