Help my dog won't take any medications at all! He is going to die!

Plain old white bread, coated with butter, folded over onto the pill works too.

There does not seem to be any single method that works 100% of the time. Sometimes peanut butter, sometimes the bread and butter trick, sometimes a pill pocket, sometimes stuffed in a slice of hot dog, sometimes wrapped in cheese and when all else fails pry open the jaws and poke it down the throat.

Ah - another trick is to make a little ball of cream cheese, stuff the pill in it and then freeze it.

It's not easy but pry his mouth open, stuff the pill in there with your finger all the way back, clamp his snoot shut and hold his nose pointing to the ceiling. Pet his jaw and throat and watch for the fake swallow. Keep holding. Then he'll really swallow. Check his mouth. MY GSD was a stinker about this too.
I had a dog that wouldn't take meds either and had to do just as you described. I hated it but it had to be done.

Petsmart has these small packets of some stinky goo that's supposed to be calming. Dunno if it calms them, but is the only thing my female Dachshund will take. She gets super freaked out by thunderstorms & fireworks that we have to give her trazadone. She won't take any treats when she gets like that, but a packet of goop & the pill in a spoon & she'll lick the spoon clean, even grab the too covered pill off the floor if it falls.

Did puppy get his meds yet?
Hope this all works out. I've been thinking about the dog all day.

No sir, he won't take any and he's been throwing up repeatedly.

Now only bile!

I will be at the vet in the morning as he need an IV at the least because he has not got up to get a drink either!

I'm a nervous wreck to be honest.

I'm sure. Good luck. It's hard watching a best friend suffer! We went through a similar ordeal with our shih Tzu. Nothing but bile... we're still giving him medication for several weeks, and he has improved. No more vomiting, and he's eating normally. Dr said he'll be on it for the rest of his life. He's 12, so we don't know how long that will be.

My brothers boxer was similar a couple years ago. He ate everything, rugs, socks, shoes etc... Ended up being a pacifier stuck in his intestine. They went ahead and did the surgery and basically lock him in an empty room now if he is alone.

Dang, what a tough situation....

You have gotten so much good advice. I feel for you and that pupper.

My only advise, right or wrong.... Is make him take it.

Enforce the fact that you are his "world". It sucks, but in his eyes. You are everything. Alpha and omega.

He is scared as any creature would be. Make him revert to "alpha" is "right". Use your influence over his whole world to make him do what is needed.

It won't be easy for you or for him. But you can use your role as his "everything" to get him to do what he doesn't want, to save him

Your right, I am tired of the stress today for both of us!

Morning will be another day!

M wife puts it in their mouth, closes it and blows air in their face. Best of luck!

Well, I am sorry to say he has not eaten or drank a thing in the last 30 hours.

He has taken about 1/2 inch of a Pupperoni treat about 4 AM. I tried some peanut butter on my finger about that time and he just turned his head away. He's acting like he's given up completely. Food and water are out of the question!

I have a Vet appointment at 3:30 this afternoon to see if he might be in any pain but I don't think so. His breathing does not seem labored either. He was lying in his kennel which we use for Pickles when we go out these days but he has moved out next to my chair and is laying on my foot.

I sure hope puppers gets fixed up and feeling like eating after the vet. That said, quality of life going forward is the paramount consideration right now. If the poor guy has cancer or some other crazy expensive treatment with chancy recovery rate I'd be looking at letting him cross the rainbow bridge and find another homeless pup to fill the void in your heart and home.
God it's dusty in here.

Well folks, just got back from our 3:30 Vet appt.

Diesel had a chest X-Ray from 2 views, a blood panel and a whole lot of spoiling from the little girls in the office who all love him to death.

When Doc gave him a listen he had next to zero breath sounds on the R side. No energy, has lost 3 pounds since Friday.

The X-Rays seriously looked just as poor as last week but essentially no worse, thankfully. The Blood panel actually looked pretty good, with the exception of the white blood cell count which was EXTREMELY low.

My boy was given a major league antibiotic injection, an industrial strength steroid injection and a serious
"Don't throw up shot".

We'll see we'll see what happens now!

A prayer for him would help!

Thanks - Jeff

I feel your pain. My 11 y/o female Dachshund hurt her back earlier this year & was completely lame in her hind end for a week or so.

That girl dog has been my devoted companion for 10 years & to say I was freaked out would be an understatement. Fortunately several sessions of laser therapy & a couple weeks of steroids got her back on her feet. She'll never be 100%, but she is around 90% & as goofy as ever.

A wiener dog's exceptional lifespan is both a blessing & a curse. You get to spend 15+ years with 'em, but you get very attached to 'em.

You and your best friend in my thoughts. Hoping for a recovery.

Nothing has worked! I am sorry to report that he will not eat, drink or do much anything. His breathing has deteriated to a point where he can no longer move. Tomorrow at 10:30 we will say our final goodbyes! He's had a good life and mad certainly improved mine!

@Ben Jefferson ,

I am so sorry, dude :(. That pain is all too familiar..went through the same thing in May.

Spend as much time as you possibly can with him tonight into tomorrow. If any of you can, roll out a bag in the floor and sleep beside him tonight. From now until tomorrow, one of ya be right there by his side every minute...

It will mean the world to him, and you.

Tomorrow’s gonna be tough...it’s gonna hurt...but, it’s a goodbye that ain’t final. If I didn’t believe that, I wouldn’t say it.

I believe I speak for everyone that reads this thread that you’re gonna have an awful lot of folks on here that’ll be thinking about yall tomorrow.

I'm so sorry.

You don't want him to suffer any more. He'll be waiting across the rainbow bridge and the reunion will be joyous.

Really sorry to hear this. It’s a tough thing to go through for sure. I’ve had to put a couple down and had a couple spare me the experience and go out on their own. Praying for you and family.
