Welcome Clark!
It is perfectly legal to purchase ammunition by mail order in almost all locations. Some states may have a minimum age for buying pistol ammo (21), and some locations with goofy gun control laws may prevent it (NY City, New Jersey, etc). So be sure to check SC’s age requirements.
Also, there are many different types of ammo. Factory loads (new) versus reloads (remanufactured ammo using once-fired cartridge cases), Brass cased versus aluminum cased versus steel cased, lead versus copper jacketed bullets, bullet shape, and intended purpose (practice/target versus self defense). All these factors affect the price of the ammo.
A friend of mine who was new to the hobby made the mistake of buying “bullets” instead of ”ammo or cartridges”. He was quite surprised when his order arrived and it contained just “bullets”, not ammunition.
As you’ve probably figured out, a “bullet” is the portion of the cartridge that exits the barrel. People who reload their own ammunition will buy them for reloading purposes.
Ammunition or cartridges is probably what you need.
Best of success to you and welcome to the hobby.
