I don't know what your time frame for purchasing a handgun is. I would say that, depending on your budget and time frame, you could hardly do wrong by buying one of the lower end CANIK models. They are Turkish clones of the CZ and are very very reliable shooters. You might have to wait for one to show up in the for sale ads. Failing that, a glock 19 or 17 are just plain dependable and fairly price competititve.

Home defense and range. Not looking to carry yet
 
Find someone who will let you use the following:
Glock 19
Sig 365
Beretta 92
M&P 2.0
CZ 75 (or Canik clone)

shoot those and see what feels right. Sometimes ranges will rent these guns out. There may be people locally who will go shooting with you to let you try theirs (one of the best aspects of this forum is the PEOPLE and not just the knowledge about guns).

In the mean time, if you just gotta have a gun NOW, one of the above are all reliable, autofeed, reasonable price handguns.

I second trying some handguns out before you plunk down money, either rent them or go with some members here. I have a few that I bought and ended up not liking much because they were not quite the way I expected them to be. It happens.
