Higher sodium intake associated with lower blood pressure. You read that right.

Wait! I thought the science was settled...

From the San Diego Union-Tribune:

In another blow against decades of accepted medical wisdom, one of the most prestigious, long-running studies reports that lowering sodium intake doesn’t reduce blood pressure.

The study also implies that most Americans are consuming a perfectly healthy amount of salt, the main source of sodium. But those who are salt-sensitive, about 20 to 25 percent of the population, still need to restrict salt intake.

Consuming fewer than 2,500 milligrams of sodium daily is actually associated with higher blood pressure, according to the Framingham Offspring Study report, given today. The American Heart Association recommends consuming no more than 2,300 milligrams of sodium daily, equal to a teaspoon of ordinary iodized table salt.

It is complicated. There are other studies that dispute the Framingham results. I imagine there will be more in the coming months and years.

What did I see on TV the other night? Bacon covered with chocolate dipped in toffee and candy pieces. I'll take two dozen....

Its one of the reasons I always saying doctors will kill you.

And just about anything in moderation is OK (disregarding poison and nuclear waste).

Learn your body and eat what suits you. If you're fat eat less. If you're skinny eat more.

Smoke and drink too in moderation. Whatever. Is it healthy? Probably not but no less healthy than the radiation we've all absorbed over the years.

OH MAN!! This is such a misleading and sensationalized report. It still states reduced salt intake helps lower blood pressure. And if anybody here is capable of measuring their salyt intake a day I will eat my salted hat! The problem is not for those people who watch their diet, cook mainly their own foods and basicly eat a healthy plant rich diet. Its for those who eat a lot of salted meats- processed foods high in salt, carbs sugar and fats. The science has not changed! This select survey followed 2600 people for 17 years. We do not know how these people were selected. If it is random or if they were coached on diet and had expectations to fulfill.
We do know what high levels of salt does to the blood, heart and circulatory.
Should everyone go salt free- absoultly not! But everyone should be aware of what is in the foods they consume. Poisons, salt, chemicals, preservatives, palm oil, saturated fats, artificial color, fillers and flavorings, etc......

Now for those who disagree with me, Go ahead and disregard the warnings, a better world through attrition.

I still eat a lot of salt because I think that girl on the Morton's box is hot. (I'm assuming that she is grown up now. I'm not that kind of prevert.)

Your opinion would taste better with salt.

salt = good

bacon = good

eggs fried in bacon grease = good

butter = good

basically all the stuff they been saying is bad is actually good, and some study by a company (margarine, big pharma) is trying to get you to buy into their crap

I came to the conclusion several years ago that anything natural (eggs, bacon, butter, lard) was much better for you than the partially hydrogenated whatever that the big companies were pushing. For pity sake, margarine was developed as turkey food.............and it killed the turkeys! So they threw in some yellow food coloring and sold it as a butter substitute.....
