Anyone use something like this?

I finally got an oem Toyota hitch package installed on my Highlander this week.
They've been scarce since the spring.

Starting to look around for one and see them at HF, Northern Tool, etc.
Don't think I need a folder unless I don't know I do.

Usage will be mostly for filling up my gas cans, some firewood, and the occasional taking my gas powered blower, weed eater to my parents house.
I can see me using it for a cooler and fishing gear on coastal trips.

Any recommendations on brand, etc?

I've used one for years. Front and rear of the truck on the hitches. Works great....love them lots, can't get along without it. Specially mounted up front, sits a bit lower and is easier to roll a deer in and out! Mind dosn't fold, so can't comment on that option. I hang it on hooks outside on the shed when not in use.

mine came from wallhell.

Get a decent one, I have had a few. The cheaper ones tend to bend and break in front of the basket. The not so cheap ones will too but handle a little more weight, and bumps from the road

That's looks like the one I have. I bought off ebay and use it to go to the beach with all the extra stuff and to haul my deer on . It's heavy but we'll made. I made a pvc frame and use the cargo cover over the frame for all the beach stuff.20200821_192203.jpg

I have had one for years but don't use it often. All I can say is don't forget it's back there.... Folding may be a good option but likely won't be quite as strong.

I've got Curt 18100 500lb aluminum folder - the basket is aluminum, the receiver tube is steel. It's pretty robust. I converted it to non-folding but still have the folding hardware. I used it once. If you're interested I'll let it go for half of the one pictured above.

I've used a Harbor Freight one for years (1-2 uses/year). Read the weight limit. Know the weight limit. Follow the weight limit.
I use it on my wife's MDX. Her dual exhaust exits right at both sides of the rack. I riveted some sheet metal exhaust deflectors to the rack and all is well.

I don’t use them myself but I’ve seen a few instances of exhaust melting plastic bins and coolers, so be sure your exhaust is diverted down or to the side!

Thanks for pointing that out.
I didn't even think about that.

My HF version has paid for itself many times over for hauling firewood, deer, rototiller, cement bags, wife's plant purchases, fertilizer, pine needles, patio blocks, trash to the drop site., gas cans, bicycles, beach chairs camping gear etc. Much easier to load heavy things on the carrier than up to the tailgate. I've used it on my pickup and suv. Better than a roof carrier because it does not affect gas mileage.

I have used both. I like the non-folding especially if it isn't needed all the time. I liked the folding one but I got tired of having to drop it when I needed to drop the tail gate. Ended taking it off and on anyway.

I had one made before they were commercially available. Built it for transporting batteries so it was heavy! Now have a truck so I sold it.

If I were to do it again I'd opt for one that folds. Going to/from places where I would use it I tend to forget it was there. Had some "#&^%$!!!" times. Luckily it was just a lamp post base, not another car.

I’ve heard this many times as well and they do make some that are slightly lifted I think to try and avoid this. I have something similar to the below but bought used to save on price. I too use mine for small lawn equipment, gas cans, bags of mulch, etc just to keep the inside of the car cleaner.
