Looking to get a holster rig for my SAA and need some opinions.
I am lean more towards “buy once cry once” so looking at El Paso Saddlery stuff but will consider other makers.
Looking more for “period correct” rig rather than a “Hollywood” style.
Not likely I will do any cowboy action competitions but it would be nice if it was “legal” if I ever decided to try it out for fun.
There is a good chance it will be used on horseback so would that factor in on holster choice?
I only have one SAA but should I just but a double rig because, well you never know…

Also what is with holsters not covering the trigger? I get it that it is not a safety concern with a single action but is it supposed to be “faster”? What is the advantage?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Well, as a person who went through all kinds of holsters for decades for a SA handgun, I'll try & offer my humble opinion.

I LIKE your thoughts on; "Buy once, cry once" mentality. As such,, I'd quit shopping around,, and contact Mike "Doc" Barranti of Barranti Leather. He's a custom maker & the absolute best quality I've ever found. Not cheap, not quickly made, but they are the best.

For horseback I'd recommend a cross draw holster or a cross chest rig, depending upon the size of the gun. (Just remember,, unless a horse it trained to accept gunfire from his back, do NOT fire while in the saddle.) :D
For SASS, & such,, I'd suggest a rig just for that,, as speed is a big factor. That's why many such rigs have exposed trigger guards. To be competitive,, you'll want a rig just for speed. A double holster rig for SASS can be either a Double rig, or a rig with a cross draw design for the off hand. YOU will have to determine what you'd prefer there.

And having only (1) SA handgun,, well, don't worry. That will change. You'll find the multiply when hidden in a safe. :D

I use several different rigs. The bottom is, iirc, a Kirkpatrick holster that is the one I use most. Coupled with a wide belt, it stays put on the draw and does not require a leg strap. The top rig is from Simply Rugged. It works well but is not quite as fast since the revolver goes deeper into the holster. It is the rig I carry to matches in case someone needs to borrow some leather. I really like the stability of the larger belt. The ammo slides for shotgun shells and rifle/revolver rounds are from a variety of sources.

Edit: I use the Simply Rugged holster if I am carrying a single action revolver in the field. The revolver is secure, protected, and easy to draw. I have crossdraw holsters of the same pattern for when I go riding on a 4-wheeler.

From el paso, count on the floral carving to be.....magnificent.

I have an el paso Tom three persons floral carved cross draw for the first blackhawk I customized.. I'd trade my wife, kids, truck and the gun but keep the holster.
