How do you like your 4Runner’s? Current car declarer total loss

Hey y’all,

Was recently in a collision where the other driver was found at fault. It was bad enough to where my ‘22 Accord Sport 2.0T was declared a total loss. I’m okay thankfully, little beat up but this body of mine just seems to keep on chuggin

I’ve been eyeing a 4Runner for a good while now, specifically the SR5 Premium trim level, model years ‘21-‘23. Would go for base SR5 but no push-start so Premium it is

How do y’all like your 4Runners? Does it fit bigger/taller men comfortably? I’m 6’3” 230 for reference

Just needing something dead-nuts reliable that will last me 5+ years, have enough cargo room for the restaurant, ability to go a little off-road, and big enough to hold me + a potential future family

Any help appreciated!
 
My 2023 4Runner was fine for my largesse, comfortable with decent Navigation, nice radio and great 4WD. Perfectly reliable. But,
Lack of power sucked, lack of enough gears sucked, and best gas mileage I got on cruise control at 70mpg, was 19mpg.
Of course, I compare it to my 2018 Yukon Denali 6.2 liter that has 420HP and a 10-speed transmission. Even with 150,000 miles, it gets 22-24mpg. Better gearing and fuel management makes a difference.
Toyota needs 5 more gears. When a Yukon can blow the doors off the Toyota, and get better gas mileage, while being considerably larger and heavier, I wonder why Toyota hasn’t upgraded the 4Runner.

They're adding gears to some of their other platforms (rav4 and corolla, for example) to get the MPG up...surprised they havent added one or two gears to the 4R

This 5th gen 4R looks great, I looked at them briefly when looking at something last summer. But mpg was part of my decision - 33ish overall sounds much better than 20
 
We’ve had 5? 4Runners over the years and my wife is currently driving a 22’ “Off road premium” so it has the softex heated seats, sunroof, rear locker and manual t case shifter. She loves it.

The other posters are right about power and lack of additional gears. That said I bought it because one, my wife loved the color (lunar rock) and two these things hold their value like no other. To buy a Chevy,GMC, Dodge and it be worth next to nothing in 5 years just doesn’t sit right with me. They are all depreciating assets but the other drop much much quicker than the 4Runner.

The 4.0 V6 and 5 speed transmissions are pretty bulletproof. If you do buy one and do minimal maintenance expect 300-400k pretty easy.

I drive fords for my company car and they have been in the shop more often than not over the last decade.

I’ve had a Tacoma and a suburban. The suburban got several MPG better than the Tacoma and had more room/power. That broke me from buying Toyotas. Doesn’t make sense to me if you’re gonna buy used to get something half the size, that cost just as much, and gets shitty mileage
 
Im 6 4 and have never been comfy in a 4 runner. Not enough width and leg room for me personally. Go on a test drive for at least 45 mins to see how you like it.
They hold value very well. The motor and trans are great and will go 300k with ease. Interior still looks from 2010.

I second this. I’m 5’ 6” and it fits me well but with the OP being over 6’ definitely do a good test drive. I know some hertz and enterprise actually have 4Runners for rent. I’d rent that sucker for a few days or week and drive it before you go spend $40-50k on a new one.
 
I can’t speak to size as I’m nowhere near 6’3, but my wife has a 2016 SR5 4x4 purchased new, sitting at about 140k. It drives great (way better than the 18 Tacoma I had), is comfortable for long road trips for our family of 4, has been dead nuts reliable (regular maintenance and 1 cracked windshield), and still looks very good 8yr later.
Our only gripes are the outdated infotainment (updated in 21 iirc) and the 18-20mpg is pretty low these days but I’ll take reliability over mpg.

If we won the lottery, my wife would probably get a new 5th Gen 4R. Idk if that says she’s easy to please or the 4R is that great :)

I had the fourth gen with the v8. It was fantastic. I pulled a trailer on an epic road trip all over the country to Alaska and back. Had some epic adventures in that thing. I trusted it with my life in some extremely serious situations. It never let me down.

I really miss it.

Had something like 285k when I sold it. Everything on it was still good to go.

MPG is only +2 vs 5th Gen.

While I’m a Toyota fan, they lack performance and mpg, but, of course, take reliability to the extreme. It’s a triangle of performance, mpg, reliability, and they’re fully in one corner.
 
They did a V8 in the 4 runner?
Yup, 03-09 4th Gen had a 4.7L V8 option, and the V8 was standard in the Lexus GX470 (4R’s rich cousin). For 2010 they killed the 4R V8, reserving it only for the Lexus GX but it changed from the 4.7L to the newer 4.6L. My GX460 gets 1-2mpg less than my wife’s 4.0L V6 5th Gen, but the little bit of extra power is nice and well worth it.
