We are replacing 8 robots and the ones going to the scrapyard have counter weights on them. I can get these for 25cent a lbs and they are 922lbs a piece. He said if I get all 8 of them I’d get a better deal. I can cut flakes off and melt them with a map torch very quickly. Any way to test them.

That acts like lead. Not many other metals you can cut with a knife and melt with a plumbers torch. Magnet test. Snipper test. Hardness tester are other methods but I expect the consensus to be lead.

I drilled one to seeing and they are solid

Group buy? I'm in for 1 if we can strap it to my elantra.

ETA: that's lead.

I'd love to have one of those for a tractor rear ballast. Lead or not

I would have guessed they were hollow and filled with non expanding concrete. Pretty neat they are solid.

How long do you have to decide, and can you shave off a small sample for testing?

I had lead counter weights that looked like that from high end x-ray tables. Seems like the weighted around 350 a piece. The lead was very pure without much tin or other metals or impurities. The large mass was a big heat sink and I had to cut with a torch. I just added a little tin and shot most thru 44's.

Boil it in some vinegar and hydrogen peroxide and see if you make tasty, toxic lead sugar. :p
