If it is going to cost you $6k plus to upgrade, how long is it going to take you to recoup that on your electric bill?
An almost no heat pump usage month is $70, January and February might be around $170. Average is probably $120 or so.

So heat pump is probably $0-90 a month depending on use. I don't know how many times more efficient a new pump is(I'm sure mine has lost efficiency from new, too) or how much rates will climb over time, but my guess is much more than the lifetime of a new unit.

My power bill from like April till Oct is around $400 a month. If I can get that down to $150 a month with the new unit. It will be 2 years on recoup.

Havent read thru the thread but I buy Tranes for the reputation and 10yr warranty on everything. Now some of that warranty is the dealer/installer and some is Trane. Trane makes or made a good better best and the better and the best had a "bonnet" on top that keeps leaves and other debris out of the outdoor unit. Its worth the extra for that to me.
