I agree the wood is nice but this is just to have one as well as to use to train for an upcoming match where we know one pickup gun will be an AK47 variant.

Just say NO to IO!

besides the cast potmetal trunnions and bolt, no AK should use a buffer of any kind.

do yourself a favor and spend $100-200 more on a good rifle like a Wasr Npap or PSAK

+1 to what Ikarus said!

I have a Yugo and love it. It's the most accurate AK that I've ever owned.
It's a bit heavier than some others but I am quite happy with it.

I had an IO AK for a week or two. It was the cheapest POS gun I have ever handled.

I have the gen 2 CAI NPAP M70 Serbian AKM clone and I love it. I looked at the IO, RAS47 and C39 and the Zastava quality outshone all the rest. For basically around the same $650 price point as the RAS you get a CHF barrel and good internals. Plus BHO function when you use Croatian surplus mags.
Highly recommend a NPAP or newer WASR for entry level AK. I am also hearing good things from the PSA US made rifles since they have switched to forged trunnions.

PAP's are way better than IO rifles in any way you could conceive or dream of. That being said, I think WASR's are better than both. And, with a WASR you get standard stock and furniture options and don't have to buy Yugo specific stuff.
Of course, Century has started putting their American made Play-Doh stocks on WASR imports instead of the Euro laminate they used to come with, so you'll want to change it out quick.

i have never shot an AK, but i am not fond of the ones with synthetic stocks... they just don't look right to me... same thing with old mousers, SKS's and tommy guns... the ones with plastic just don't look right..

also add to that list, the new mini 14's and garands that have the plastic top piece...

Mausers, SKSs , and Thompsons - agreed, those need wood. However AK-12 needs no wood, only less import restrictions, and this coming from a guy that removed a synthetic stock from an AK in favor of laminated wood.

Behold, the state-of-the-art Kalashnikov variant:

WASR availability has slowed wayyyyy down due to production being shifted to military contracts. Also, most WASRs had issues with canted sights and a crappy finish pre-2013~ish. But yeah they follow the standard pattern. Are Romanian chicks hotter than Serbian chicks? I think I need at least one of each

Some of I.O.'s AK gas ports were big enough to be considered trash receptacles

Not only visual garbage, but possibly dangerous to the shooter.

I.O. AK = no damn way!

I have had an IO AK for about 4 years (nephew used to work there). It has never given me a single problem. I have not had another to compare to but this one has been just fine. Just swapped the trigger and good to go.

I've repaired one with an oversized gas port that literally beat the rear trunnion almost out of the receiver. When I removed the rivets and the rear trunnion, I discovered that they had used non swell neck rivets and didn't dimple the receiver for swell neck rivets. With cutting corners on something as simple as that, it made me wonder where else they had.

Tsconver stay far, far away from IO AK's. It's not a matter of if you have problems but when, and good luck getting any kind of response or warranty work done from them.

your best bet is to pick up an import AK, such a the NPAP you posted or a WASR, or if you're willing to spend a bit more, an Arsenal or converted Saiga.

Amen to all of that, and a big +1 for Arsenal.

I've been happy with my WASR that I ordered a few years ago. It does suffer from some bolt sticking from time to time, but only when manually running the charging handle back. If I pull up on the CH when working it, no problems. I've been meaning to take the polishing wheel to a few spots to see if I can slick it up.
