I really dislike my neighbors....

Besides killing a bunch of black snakes and bees one of mine is starting to turn into a nosy little jerk.

Guess you need to send a polite message. Some people don;t take subtle hint though. Maybe a strong legal message is the way to go. You won’t likely be friends again, but you could be good neighbors with clear boundaries.

Had a run-in with my neighbor last week and it reminded me of this thread. Just have to hold out a couple more months then I can list the current home for sale.

Current progress on the new home.

Yeah, but looking at the new home, you are still gonna have neighbors. Some of them will probably be assholes too.

Threads like this make me appreciate my little neighborhood. Our houses are a bit too close and we are looking to move in the next few years after the adoption finalizes. But my closest neighbor and I see each other about 3-4 times per year. Only issue I have ever had with him was once his daughter accidentally hit the wooden fence between our houses, and he apologized profusely and had it fixed within a day or so. He also has big dogs that sometimes ram the fence between us, but they wanna play, not fight, and any damage they have done he has had fixed immediately. My neighbors across the street just smile and wave, the ones diagonal to us bring us donuts sometimes.

My closest neighbor is probably 150 yards diagonally from us. He’s a cool guy and we haven’t had any issues. He also has a nice 67ish f100. Me and a few buddies were standing outside last week when he pulled out of his drive. Stopped in the middle of the road and lit the tires. Only problem I have is I’m envious of his truck.

They keep to themselves and we have clearly marked boundaries with an HOA. HUGE difference from the neighborhood I currently live in.

The best neighbors are those that really aren't-
One house is quarter mile from us in one direction, the other a half mile in the other direction.
Sometimes I hear the closest one, most never hear the other.

My neighbors...One of them doesn't mow and has two foot tall rye grass in front. He also has a broom handle stuck upright in the front yard for no obvious reason. The guy next to him rents his house. That tenant is a nightmare. Has a truck that leaks oil. The guy doesn't want oil spots in the driveway so he street parks...now the street looks like a junkyard parking lot. He's got a dead van that has no tags just sitting in the driveway. There's a gate that broke off the fence leaning up against the side of the house. His kids are like 3 and 6 years old. They roam the neighborhood like they're feral, shirtless and barefoot. This guy is being evicted as I type this.
The next neighbor is also a renter. Overall they're quiet and the yard is kept. The cops show up once in while, I think the step dad and the adult son don't get on well. They generally don't cause issues so live and let live is easy.
Other side of my place the neighbor has 5 adults and 8 children living in it. They've got six cars (two of them are junkers) and only space for four. Nobody is married. Four divorced adults and a widowed grandma. The kids run from 1-14 or so in age. They play outside and are respectable kids, but there's so damn many of them it feels like a child care facility. Good people, just a lot of them for the house. They're moving soon, fingers crossed fewer good people move in. The people next to them are good people too. One child, very well mannered. These people are real neighbors. They bring over food to surprise us. We watch their boy once in a while. If I was going to complain it would be about the trailer in the driveway, but the guy's got to work and his trailer is part of it.
The guy next to him is quiet and respectful, but I guess there was a drug overdose in the house a few months back...everybody has their demons. The next house down from that is more nice people, but a crap load of cars. They park in the street constantly because they don't have space.
We have an HOA, but they don't do anything. Probably better this way. Who wants the neighborhood nazis to patrol? Not me. Their lackadaisical attitude means I don't have to obsess about the patchy condition of my front lawn. Growing grass down here is a total pain in the butt.

Just get a few “highly opinionated” t-shirts (2A, Gun Makers or Ranges, etc) to do yard work in ... clean your guns on your patio/deck ... a good “highly opinionated” yard sign (Friends, Good Neighbors and Some Relatives Welcome ... Everyone Else F-Off! is at the bottom of my driveway) ... etc. Be as un-PC as hell and if they don’t like it they don’t bother you ... if they like it you’ve made a good neighbor.

Works. I used to mow the yard shirtless while wearing a camo boonie. Drove the Karen across the street crazy. I miss that old neighborhood a little, but I don't miss the busybody one bit.

Neighbors and an HOA, screwed.
I can't wait to get the house up, we got enough land that we will never see a neighbors house, and I won't have anyone telling me what I can or can't do with my place.

Unfortunately I don't have the money for lots of land. Would be the first thing I would buy if I hit the lottery.

I had a thread here recently about neighbors (specifically some neighborhood kid riding the neighbors four wheeler in my yard), but, honestly, only issue Ive had here in 3.5 years.

I bet he will let you wash it if you offered. ;)

Oh hell no! That sucks. You just might have won (lost) the worst neighbor award.

Unless you are young and like to party

Covid has been a blessing, college sent them all home from campus so it's only been the permanent a-holes there for a couple of months. But, when they get to come back, the problems will surely start again. I don't mind college kids, I do mind hundreds of them and the parties and noise and litter and many other problems they bring with them.

...or they’ve been secretly mounting liens on your property and will one day exercise their “authority” to foreclose on you.
Yep. Back in Illinois I went after my board who had a similar closed books approach. I ended up recruiting 7 neighbors and forcing an election. It really divided the neighborhood, but their bullschnitt closed books thing stopped. I served for a term and retired. HOA boards need to be held accountable.

I have my attorney watching, he has a dislike of HOA's that do this and other bull crap. I have heard from long time residents that a bunch of shady shit happened in the past, that is why the books are kept closed. I really think most people that live in HOA do not care, the dues are cheap, less than $500 a year, so nobody has pushed or asked about the books. I have not made a big deal about it, do not tell people I stopped paying the dues.

We're pretty lucky here. Small-ish development of 28 planned & 21 built. Lots run from .67 acres to 2 acres & median home price is right at $250K. ~ 8 miles south of 40/85, just of NC54. Nice neighborhood & out in the sticks a bit, being right at 2 miles from a gas station or Dollar General.

When we first moved in 12 years ago, it wasn't uncommon for there to be 2 or 3 groups of drunk people staggering between several simultaneous weekend parties. Drunk naked people in the pond & fireworks good enough to get the Alamance County Sheriff's Department to ride out kinda fun. We've got an HOA, but the dues are only $225/yr & they don't do anything anyway. If you got a beef with a neighbor, figure it out or take it to civil court yerself. HOA Prez's husband rides a Harley & the idle of his track prepped 'Vette will screw up your heart rhythm. He's got a ton of toys- side by side, dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, etc. & he & his little girls will cruise the neighborhood for a few laps. Several Harleys in the neighborhod & few hotrods, to boot. Almost all the neighbors have at least one dog, so no one bitches about mine barking & everyone takes care of their critters & keep 'em under control. A couple of the neighbors' dogs when they'd get loose & would come straight to our house, to visit with ours & cadge a treat off the missus right quick before their owner caught up with 'em. A few former military, a couple of active LEO. Couple of the neighbors' adult children own their own homes here, as well. Pretty diverse 'hood with a couple of black families & a couple hispanic of both the Puerto Rican & Mexican persuasions.

Most all of us hunt, shoot, or carry or all of the above, so no weirdness on that end.

Everybody's chill & either minds there own business or is friendly to the point that y'all know each others' extended families & friends & have become good friends with some of them. When you hear a Harley fire or a V8 rumble, everybody chuckles & knows who's having fun, even when I'm coming into the neighborhood & give my bike a good 2nd gear BRAP on the quarter mile leading into the neighborhood. Loud music on a weekend night is usually a bat signal to come over & hang out if ya wanna. When ever someone has a whole buncha people over, every one parks along that 1/4 mile entrance, off the road. You'll never see a car in a driveway or a yard that doesn't belong there. Fireworks are expected on the 4th & New Year's Eve & the HOA Prez's husband always has pro level fireworks.

It's about a 50/50 split between NC natives & transplants & the majority of the homes are still occupied by the original owners & only one being rented & we rarely even saw either of the 2 tenants that have lived there. Lady next door got tazed by the SO, when they were called out for their adult son having an autistic/mildly schizophrenic episode & she went after a deputy when they cuffed her son. There've been other appearances of LE, EMT, or FD, but never anything out of control & whatever it was was handled quietly. Tazer lady & her husband are good people & the kid's never been anything but respectful toward me, so whatever. Stuff happens.

So far we've only recently gotten our first jerk neighbor, of the busybody, nosy variety. Older couple in their late 70's, he's a little old retired school music teacher, she's a tiny, meek little housewife type. They bought the empty, heavily wooded 1 acre lot beside their house & he got butthurt when he found some old rubbish back in the trees & got loud with a couple different neighbors about it, including a really sweet 60-something lady that I like a bunch, when her husband wasn't around. Little carpet bagger MFer realized his mistake with a quickness & has learned to mind his own damned business. He was whining to "The Mayor"- older guy from PA/NJ area. Benign nosy neighbor & friendly. Biker, 'Nam Vet, bit of a kook, but good guy. Used to ride with him frequently before his health started slipping a couple years ago. Carpet bagger's askin' the Mayor about me, 'cos he thought I might somehow be involved with the rubbish that was tossed in the woods 10 years before he ever moved in & bought the lot. Mayor told him, "You really do not wanna go & bother that man. Whatever you're upset about, you need to let that go." Long as he stays in his lane, we're good, but if confronts my wife like he did Lisa, I'm gonna hurt his feelings & deeply. He's a little Napolean, but apparently smart enough to know when to shut up & stay away & I'm okay with that, so no biggy.

Also realize we've gotten very lucky so far & are looking for the right spot in lower Alamance to build our forever home on a couple of quiet, wooded acres.

The best is buy a “gag” orange t-shirt with “COUNTY INMATE 24680” on it ... even better buy a few and have your friends wear them when you’ll are baling hay ... talk about looks on faces and crap-n-go’s :D.

That's a good looking new house! Like the color scheme. Interested in the floor plan....
Why don't you just drop by, go in to take a look. It's not like it's finished or anything. I'm sure the neighbors won't mind.

Locks go on this week. Been running loads of "lookers" off when I stop by on the way home from work.

Obviously most think I'm a subcontractor working on the lot and are shocked to find out that I'm the owner.

Umm... Okay. o_O

For clarification, the carpet bagger accosted her while her husband was at work. She's got a seizure disorder, but is a really sweet, funny lady & I like her a bunch. Platonically. :D Her husband Tom is very cool as well. They gave up bikes due to her health issues & have one of those Polaris Slingshots they like to cruise around in. He also drives a bitchen '13 Mustang Boss 302 in Grabber Blue. Perfect neighbors till Mr. Magoo moved here from WI.

My old HOA had a little teeth most didn't know about. In order to sell the house they needed a clear to close letter from the Association. If there were unpaid bills they needed to be paid before they would issue a letter. This crushed more than one closing date. Our HOA only cost $46 annually so it's not too big a bill, just enough to piss you off that you're jumping through hoops over pennies. At $500 annually, that could add up.
