Anything wrong with them?

I’ve had a couple Smith 627 PC’s. I liked them, but I just wanted some other models better. I’ve seen Jerry Miculek say that the 8-rd cylinder lends itself to a good trigger, despite the fact that it’s bigger and heavier than some other models, because of the short distance between stops. I dunno, but the triggers on both of mine were pretty good. With moon clips .38/.357 is kinda a pia for me because there is no standard rim dimension for cases, making it a mix and match game for different manufacturers and clip thicknesses. I loved the 5” barrels on mine. 5” on an N frame just seems like a perfect balance to me. One word of caution, and I think this was discussed on a recent thread about a 686: check the gun thoroughly before you buy - specifically the barrel. My last 627 was purchased new in 2019 and I realized about 5 min after I got home the barrel wasn’t aligned correctly. They fixed it, but it was a bummer to wait nearly two months for Smith to do the work.

There’s a used one for sale at Highlander Armory in Newton. I think it’s listed at $850 and has rails both top and bottom. I thought about buying it myself but I’m just not a revolver kinda guy. Give them a call and ask for Jessie.

I've got a Taurus 608 4". Had it for... apparently a while now since I paid $419 brand new at a gun shop in CA. The MSRP is 2x that now. Crazy.

Anyway, no drama with mine other than the barrel is fairly stained from all the crud out of the porting. Lotta full power 357 out of it with insufficient cleaning.

I knew better than to open this one! That Ruger is OOOOOOO-LA-LA!!!

Eh, I don't know... That Ruger just doesn't do it for me appearance wise. Technically, maybe, but I prefer a classic line.
It's kinda like tactical lever actions for me. I appreciate what they are, but they don't appeal to me.

I really want one of these but rarely show up for sale.

Those are ghastly. The race gun cylinder kills it for me & the vented barrel shroud is a bit much, as well. Traditional cosmetics & I'd be all over it. I do occasionally think about a 5 1/2" Redhawk 8-shooter & they aren't much cheaper.

The S&W PC 5 1/2" 627 is a honey, but I can't do that Hillary-hole.

Ive got an old 607 ( the direct predecessor to the 608 that was discontinued once they figured they could cram 8 rounds into an N frame sized cylinder...), its been a great gun... ugly as heck because it had a rough life before I ever even saw it, but I only paid like 250 bucks for it.

If someone handed me a 608, I'd take a look at it...

Who cleans a Taurus?

I've handled a few of those Rugers. ANd while the pics make them look funny,, and yes,, they are "different" looking,, in person, they aren't as bad. Plus,, they are built for competition,, so they went a different route in design. To help with cost,, a plain barrel, with a cover shroud. (Easier to get proper cylinder gap, timing & sight alignment.) And by adding the slots,, it reduces the weight,, to be able to handle it's movements quicker. Most folks that get one of those will be shooting softer loads in competition. Speed is the name of the game.
And the odd cylinder etc. By making a shorter cylinder in the 9mm,, they can get a longer barrel in a shorter package.

I know everybody has different tastes,, but they did talk to serious revolver competitors to create that design.

I bought a Taurus 608 from @Jakerson9 and it was a decent piece. So decent he wanted to buy it back from me. Maybe it's time to see if he'll sell it back to me.🤣

I liked it, had no issues with it.

Who cleans a Taurus?

My dad. Anything I leave in his safe gets magically cleaned.

The major downside is how hard it is to get back out of his safe after it goes in.... he treats possession as ownership most the time.

So maybe I need to change my earlier post and say that I used to own a 608...

Seriously considering having my R8 done up similar to this one minus the red dot...I really like the contrasting shades!!
This is my home screen image on my phone😁

I love wheelguns and I've had a few double action 8-round 357's, a Taurus 608 and a ruger 5051.
The Taurus had a 3 inch barrel and the Ruger a 2.75 inch. They were both very well built and way easier to shoot than most revolvers. Opinions vary, but I think they were both beautiful.

To answer the original question: there are two reasons not to get one, size and weight. Weight: The little Ruger was 44 ounces. A 4 inch Taurus 608 is listed at 44 ounces. So - When loaded, THREE pounds.

On size: those 8-shot 357s are built to sustain nuclear fallout that would kill cockroaches. Saying BIG... isn't going to explain.
Here are a few photos showing 5-round, 6-round, 7-round and 8-round revolvers; and 9ne showing the 608next to a 617: a 7 round revolvers that is about the size of a Smith 65 frame.

Photos don't do it justice. In terms of size:The 8-round revolvers is large enough to eat the others for breakfast

8rnds you say...

I want one too.

Unfortunately S&W rarely seems to make them in 4.5 or 6 inch normal looking barrels. Always with the weird shrouds/rails/steampunk crap. That or the crazy short barrel.

Just a perfectly normal 686/627 8 shot would be fine thanks.

Classic? We're looking 8 shot 357s

Oh yeah, I know the why of it & I'm sure it's a great revolver, it's just fugly to me. I'd love one with traditional cosmetics, ala an over sized GP100 (& please no SRH snout).
