a good friend of mine gave me this rattle canned ar upper he had no clue who made it because it was given to him by someone else. the guy that gave it to him is said to only deal in higher end stuf. it has a square mark on the reciver and i figured out that means brass aluminum and all the barrel says is "556 nato 1/7" i have plans to build it but not sure what i should do if its a nicer upper i will add nicer parts and if its cheaper i will go that route. i did put it on my delton lower today and it ran fine. any advice is helpful im far from an ar expert.1000000077.jpg1000000077.jpg

also the hand guard is magpul witch is nicer stuff and it had a troy industries rear sight that i looked up on amazon and its like 100 bucks so im thinking it might be a good one. and it is a rifle length gas system i think not sure if that helps any

That isn’t rifle length gas, that is mid length.

I’m betting 100% it’s a standard $250 psa upper

Looks like midlength gas to me, but it's hard to tell from the pic angle. Measure it and see.

The square is a forge mark, and lots of AR builders use raw forgings from the same couple places, so that doesn't necessarily help identify the company.
Could be PSA or Aero.

Welcome to the forum, neighbor.

The beauty of the AR platform is its flexibility in build.

I say don't worry about high end parts for it right now, give it a decent build and if it turns out to be diamond in the mud later, you can always upgrade it.

You're correct on the square upper receiver marking. https://www.ar15.com/forums/ar-15/Square_forge_mark_on_upper_/118-437739/ Not a ton of information in this post but maybe it'll help some.

The Troy rear sight is great - actually my favorite BUIS set personally, especially with the HK-style front sight. TBH I think that looks like a mid-length gas, not a rifle length gas system. That's good though. mid-length is what you want for a 16" barrel. More than likely it's a PSA, just by economy of scale. https://palmettostatearmory.com/psa...r-with-bcg-ch-mbus-rear-olive-drab-green.html But tbh? Bro gave you a free upper. I'd stick with the spirit of the gift and either run it as an acceptable personal rifle, or give it to someone you care about who needs a gun. If it runs well on one of your existing lowers, I'd plop a good-but-cheap red dot like a Sig Romeo 5 or Holosun 503R on it and attach a Vickers BFG sling to it and run it.

For BCG, Toolcraft or Microbest would be the two I would recommend for it. Charging handles, I'd either do a basic milspec if you need to keep it cheap, or either a Radian Raptor, BCM, or Geissele Airborne if you want to spend more money but get a more handy product. Don't buy a cheap Chinesium knockoff CH though, if you can help it.

You've got a good friend!

I agree with the above... Troy makes a great back up iron sight. Keep it.

It's much more likely to be an upper from Aero or PSA than from Daniel Defense, but that's not a bad thing. This upper is great and it'll last you a long time.

If I were you, I'd slap it on a lower, spray paint them both to match each other, put the Troy sight back on, put a red dot on it, and shoot it! I wouldn't "upgrade" it. Save that money and buy ammo!

i like the idea i put a ultradot red dot i had on it to test it a little today i thinking just be on the lookout for deals on parts and keep it to the side with the dot bc i run a scope on the rifle i do have. thanks for the input man appreciate it!

Don't listen to those hacks. They ain't yer friends.

Frankly the whole things stinks to high heaven, from the "gift" to the so called advice these guys are giving ya. Makes me wonder if you got a friend in the world. In this stew of sharks.

What they aren't telling ya is this is gonna be a money sink. They're all just waiting for the right moment to pounce on you with all the "great deals", since "you're one of us", that they would be willing to let go of...for a real steal, to make that puppy run like a Singer. Of course its all coming outta their reject/buyers-remorse parts bin. And at a hefty markup no doubt.

You poor guy. Since no one else is willing to step up, to be a real friend, I guess I am going to have to be the one to jump on the 'nade fer ya.

I'll PM you my mailing address, you just box it up, send it my way, and I'll take care of the rest.

Tell my Momma I lo...
