I received this email from congressman Walter Jones

Dear Mr. *,

Knowing of your support for fiscal responsibility and ethics in governance, I am troubled to report to you that there is an effort in Congress to bring back pork barrel spending projects, commonly known as earmarks.

This is a horrible idea. After numerous scandals over many years, including some members of Congress being convicted and sent to prison for corruption, the House of Representatives and Senate banned earmarks in January of 2011.

Nothing will fill the swamp faster than going back to earmarks. It is astonishing to me that this is even being considered. I saw with my own eyes the corruption and fiscal irresponsibility wrought by earmarks. Members of Congress went to jail because of earmarks. Deficits ballooned, in part, because of earmarks. The problems on Capitol Hill are many. Returning to pork barrel spending will make them all worse.

I want to assure you that I am doing everything I can to keep this from happening. For starters, I am cosponsoring H.R. 5369 – The Earmark Elimination Act. This bill would permanently ban earmarks in Congress. I am also cosponsoring H.R. 4818 – The Pulled Pork Act. This bill would prohibit the use of federal funds toward earmarks. Furthermore, I am joining many of my colleagues in demanding that, if the leadership of the House of Representatives decides to hold a vote to bring back earmarks, they hold that vote in public, not behind closed doors. The public has an absolute right to know how their representatives vote. That is especially true on a matter as controversial as this.

Please know that I will continue to fight for this cause and for our country’s fiscal future. With the debt at $21 trillion and the annual deficit projected to rise to $1 trillion as soon as this year, we simply cannot afford more wasteful pork barrel spending.

Thank you for the opportunity to update you on this important issue. If I can ever be of assistance on this or other federal matters, please do not hesitate to let me know. May God bless you, and may He continue to bless America.

Sincerely,
