I've had a car i bought for nothing knowing it was junk. I've done a head gasket to get it running orginaly. Replaced the clutch a good while ago. Most recently the timing belt tensioner blew apart and exited through the side of the timing cover.... belt looked pretty new guess I should've known better.

I got new valves in the head direct from the finest Chinese factory but before I slap it back together I'm tempted to go full retard and just start shoving in boost until it dies... now would be the perfect time to oring the heads for peak foolishness.

How many hours would you put into a hyundai accent? Probably less than I have.

Sounds like you need to boost and prep this thing for the Grassroots Motorsports $2000 Challenge

Is this a Hyundai from the throw away years? Or a 2008ish up?

If the former. They are to be thrashed until death then forgotten. The Koreans got pretty good with decent cars around 2010. But an already clapped Accent still leans toward "cut the losses".

Turbo.... no way.
Just finish putting it back together and drive it as cheap transportation or sell it. A lot of those cheap Chinese parts on ebay/amazon are of very poor quality.

They've been using the same engine for a long time. If you get one with out a garbage tranny and with out the sand in the block They're honestly okay cars. This one predates the sand issues. I've beat on this thing super hard and that's kinda why I've got it.

My losses are only counted in hobby hours.

Ain't heard of that but doing some lemons rally type stuff has always been something I wanted to do. I got an old f600 I will get running the first time anyone's dumb enough to have a race where it'll pass tech.

Can you afford to be without this ā€œcarā€?

Before we make too much fun of it I know some folks need their car to get to work. They need to work or they donā€™t get paid. They need to get paid to keep their POS car on the roadā€¦ā€¦

Its a tough cycle to break and can be devastating for people in poverty.

If this is the caseā€¦. Iā€™ll bet someone on here can help you keep it running.

If, on the other hand, this is a little hobby/fun thing to doā€¦. keep playing until itā€™s not fun.
this isn't my real car. I have 3 others... well 2 other real cars

I see. Fix and run into the ground or sell. Boost will just cost money and mostly time. It will be stupid fun for the few days it takes to break something. I've seen the old Accent 3 doors blow out A arms, cv axles, etc with stock power. It's not really just the drivetrainšŸ¤£

If you do throw boost at it. I expect details and videos! I hope it is the unicorn that goes through years abuse! God speed and don't forget to document!

My Uncle in Texas had plans to shoehorn a ā€œbuiltā€ Porsche 914 engine/drive train into a VW Thing. The shop that built the 914 engine said it was between 220-230hp ā€¦ in a 2,000lb car.

Weird ideas are many times pure fun!

I put in new axles when I did the clutch. Gotta find out how to brake them.

I see so much potential for stupid in this car beacuse it is only around 2000lbs.

Grassroots Motorsports is a magazine that for years (since about 1999 or maybe earlier) has had a 'challenge'
The year is how much you can spend...TOTAL.
There are three events - drag, auto-x, and a concours/car show.

2 grand and youve got some really cool cars being built. Some running 10s (maybe someone hit 9s, I cant recall) in the 1/4.
Issue - it's in Gainesville :(
But, one day, I promise, I will build a car and then also 'campaign' in some LeMons races or ChumpCar/whatever the new name is

I can throw some big tires on it, throw in a bunch of boost and..... get killed by a civic with ebay turbos

Cut the converter off and sell itā€¦..push the rest off a cliff.

To the OP,, go for it !!! Since your talking about O -ringing the head to help prevent head gasket failure I'm assuming you know what you are doing. So, just do it. If you dont, you will always wonder about this build when your old and you cant that stuff any more.

Any illusion of competency is just that, an illusion

When I was married we had an 02 Santa Fe that just kept having stuff break. We later learned only get a Hyundai after the change in big boss, can't remember the dudes name. He really got them making real cars.

Everybody's got a hobby of some kind, and a hobby car isn't any better or worse than anything else when push comes to shove.

If you like working on it, I say have at it. If, however, it's an actual car to be depended upon for transportation and work...either get serious about upping the ante with this "hobby" to make it dependable, or cut your losses.
