Improving Heavy Clay Soil and Maximizing Potato Production

Just a few comments:

1. Peat moss is an unsustainable source of soil amendment....unlike composted hardwood leaves which are freely available nearly everywhere in NC

2. Clay soils are pretty good retainers of nutrients once they are mixed in so "longevity" of peat moss is nearly irrelevant

3. Hardwood mulch is free at most landfills

Yep, every leaf that falls in my yard goes to the garden to be mulched up. I've been known to grab a tarp and get the neighbors leaves when they put them on the road for collection. I don't like peat much either. I quit using it in raised beds.

I used to get garbage bags full of shredded paper and mulch it in also. Anything to break up the clay is good.
