Yesterday the wife and I spent the day in Alton Virginia at VIR for the IMSA series race. Apart from the miserable heat, it was great.
We started by crossing the bridge as the Lambo class was in their qualifying event. A very cool way to start the day, two dozen new Super Trofeo at full song going up the esses.

Miata class had, hands down, the best racing of the day, as it's a spec class. Tight, wheel to wheel racing.
Saw the top sports car class during 90 minutes of practice as well as qualifying. And with qualifying, saw the LMP3 cars do that, too.
And then finished off with the GS/TCR cars in their 2 hour sprint.

It's not cheap, but 65 bucks for 8 hours of entertainment - not a bad deal at all.
Go, pack up a picnic and enjoy some awesome cars. But make sure you visit the pits and garages to get up close with these machines. The crews are very kind and dont mind if you step into the garage for a photo as long as you dont interrupt them

Even had a crew guy apologize for 'messing up' my picture as he was leaving the garage, seriously cool folks.

Prototypes are SMALL.
They're about the same size, width and length, as a GT car, but shorter and much lighter.

Very cool. IMSA at VIR. I had no idea. I spent the morning sucking at shooting 200yd center fire benchrest and the afternoon buying a car for my 86 yr old mother who will never drive it. Would have rather been sweating at VIR.

I'll try to post BEFORE the event next time (though you could still make the main race today!)
As you can see from my post, you can get right up to the cars, lots give away items, and lots of cool cars to look at in the parking area too!

I downloaded the 2023 Schedule and they are back at VIR next year, same time. Always wanted to go to Road Atlanta.

Thanks for posting the pics! VIR is one of my all-time favorite places. The #32AMG was driven in the first stint by my track day instructor Mike Skeen. I was cooking for kids and grands so I was watching as best I could as it was on USA network as an apparently last minute broadcast change. I recorded to watch later.
Sounds like you had a great day!

USA replay on Thur at noon and 1pm, Protos noon, Lambo's 1pm
Are you going to watch these on TV?
Someone was filming us at one time ('us' being me, wife, and a few others on a small set of bleachers)
Im curious if we/our backs and my bald spot get shown with some cool cars in front of us

Yeah, supposed to be on CNBC but got changed last minute due to NASCAR at Daytona. I recorded the ones on USA while I watched.
Skeen is good! I actually said something to her during practice on Saturday, she said she was pulling for that car because she liked how it looked (lol, fair enough), and I said something about him. A very good driver

Next year I need to take my camera, many of my on-track shots are bad due to the fence, where a DSLR will 'compensate' for that quite a bit

Thanks for the pictures...I really like the little Mazdas.....The Alfa Romeos and the Aston Martins are doing great this year in F1....

One of the few racing series' that has been consistently cool for a very long time.

The Miata race was GREAT!
I timed it - something like 14 second spread for almost the entire field. That's good racing!
Ones that werent in that window were the ones that had offs and had to pit to have a rear bumper removed etc

There was one (?) AR racing on Saturday evening and it looked good! Ran well too.

Yep. Really great racing and the announcers were discussing the prize money - it pays out a lot from the organization, but there's lots of companies putting money in too.
