When North State (now Lumos) finally installed fiber to our street, we switched from Spectrum. Since then, the cost has crept up and suddenly has become $280 per month. šŸ˜³

The breakdown is $174 for TV (basic, nothing special), $76 for 500/500 internet and $32 for IP phone. Every TV in the home has Roku (a couple are actually TCL/Roku TVs). So, Iā€™m wondering what yā€™all are using for IP TV. Even after their 90 day promo expires, YouTube TV would be around $100 less than TV from Lumos. I suppose that when I try to dump the TV, theyā€™ll tell me I have a ā€œspecial packageā€ and jack up the internet and phone. šŸ¤¬

Just give up TV. It's made me a happier person. If there's something I really want to watch I have an antenna, if it's not on OTA then I just hoist the colors. Aargh!

If you have fiber what is the charge for WiFi receiver for? You don't have your own access point/wireless router?

Pluto. The amount of content Pluto has is unreal for free. Available as an app on Roku.

Yeah, I knew someone would likely ask. Apparently, the current technology provides for streaming the TV to each local box by WiFi. So, those 3 boxes are the equivalent of cable STBs.

Any particular channels you have to have?

Cheapest? Frndly or Philo with an OTA antenna. Other options as @Les White alluded to.

Since theyā€™re threatening to ban TikTok, Iā€™m only left with MSNBC to get real news. šŸ¤“

A switch and some ethernet cabling would save you $27 a month?

We switched to Roku on every TV a few years back. Works great for us. Philo I believe is $24.95 a month. If you have Amazon prime, it's OK for movies and such. Freeview if you don't mind a few commercials. Pluto is good also. It has saved us a bit of money so far, and I can't see going back in the near future.

I donā€™t think so. I assume that the video is scrambled and a box for each TV is necessary.

So, I just called Lumos. If you buy some hardware and run Ethernet cables you can save $27 a month. Move to just streaming by dropping TV as well and you pay for your new gear and cabling in a few months.

If you are still buying green bananas it's worth considering IMO.

I appreciate that. Iā€™m prepaid for another month so Iā€™ll begin searching for options tomorrow. As I mentioned above, Iā€™m afraid dropping TV may lead to an increase in the internet cost.

My Roku has a WiFi option as well. It's quite possible with the new advancements in consumer grade mesh networking that you wouldn't even need to run Ethernet to the TVs. That is likely the same tech Lumos is using but I didn't think to ask during our call.

That would drastically cut your installation headaches.

Undoubtedly it will, but can you get enough TV to watch with an overall lower bill? In other words subscribe to streaming services for less.

Iā€™m pretty sure itā€™s possible. I donā€™t know about the taxes and fees for YT TV but the raw cost is nearly $100 less per month than the all-in cost of TV from Lumos.

YT TV costs me 78.10 per month all in. I donā€™t have any of the extra add ons. Irritating, I started at 34.95 a few years back, it has steadily gone up.

I just have the basic 5g internet from T-Mobil @ $40/month, use only free streaming for tv, with the exception of Prime, no house phone. Works great, alot better than the $187/month I was paying for internet and cable.
