Is .410 like Bud Light?

It certainly does seem to be the ammo that has not yet got the 'crisis is over' memo.

I have a pump Mossberg and a Savage SxS in .410 which get no range time.

These sadly watch while all their safe-mates go out to play.

I keep the small amount of stash I have, but absent reasonably priced replacements...
... and 62 - 68 cents a round is not reasonable IMHO.

True Shot had 250rd cases of 2 3/4 bird shot but with shipping and tax it ended up being about $1 per round. And that was some off brand stuff I've never seen. But it was there if you wanted it I guess.
$25 dollars a box. Can you believe it.
I manage to pick up a box or two here and yon, and I get around. But I think I might've picked all the pickings. Pretty dry.

Ive seen name brand on line but its high as a georgia pine. Love my 1100 410. Rose Hill if still open has a shorter sporting clays course that some folks call "sub gage" and its a hoot to shoot with a 410. If doing that doesnt put a smile on your face, you dont have a pulse.

Worker at my local Walmart says they get in a few boxes every couple weeks and it always sells out immediately. I haven't seen any on the shelves in probably a year.

For some reason or another, can't remember why, I saw this one coming.

My favorite squirrel shotgun is a .410 side by side coach gun with #4 shot. I usually run the .22 for squirrels once the leaves come off, but that .410 is too much fun not to use.

I stocked up during the "trump slump".

500 rounds #4 Winchester 3"
250 #6 3"
250 #8 3"

The only thing that I neglected was 3" buckshot. Just didn't use it that much. Had a couple 3 boxes, 10-15 rounds.

But then one friend in particular started a couple of his daughters deer hunting with .410 buckshot.
Surprisingly they started killing deer. I gave him all I had.

Took me another 2.5 years to stock up. Thankfully a few months ago SGAmmo popped up with 100 round cases of the 3" Winchester 000. Was able to grab a couple just in case.

The ones of us who have proclivities to "stock up" tend to neglect some of the shotgun stuff. Even when we think we are doing it if you look at the numbers as compared to rifles and pistols we really aren't doing it so the same level.

I'll pick it up when I see it so the kids can keep running it after I am dead if they want to because I certainly have enough to last my lifetime.

SGAmmo is my friend in this pursuit.

I believe remembering back in the late 80s, when I could catch 12 gauge dove shells on sale for around $3.50-4 per box, a box of .410 dove loads were still $9-10.

It sucks, I don't like it, but the ratios are still pretty much the same price-wise as they were 30 years ago. There are certainly no longer any "name brand" boxes of 12 gauge dove loads for $3.50 (by and large). They've pretty much doubled. So has .410. Just the way it is.

.410 isn't alone. .30 carbine is still over .90 per. I bought it at less than .40/per. It held on for about 6 months past the point that 9mm disappeared before it started climbing. I don't expect it's going to recover. Good thing I have a ton of brass and can roll my own.

Our Academy had some a few months ago. Federal #6 and #7 1/2 at $17.99 per 25 round box. I was getting low so I got 4 boxes for my Snake Slayer.
It seems like Bond Arms needs to start making ammo.

Ammo is this weird chicken and egg thing. One reason 9mm is so popular? Plentiful, cheap ammo. Why is the ammo plentiful and cheap? Because the caliber is popular so they make a lot of it. I like the .410, but like so many other calibers I liked there have to be enough people willing to deal with obscenely high prices for factory ammo for a while in order to show the ammo makers that it’s worth it to tool up for bigger runs, which will bring the price down. Most folks buy what’s cheap now and it’s hard to blame them.

I haven’t seen #6 shot in a while. That’s all I like to shoot. I’ve got a few boxes but need to find more for my girls to shoot

Is most everybody willing to run 2.5" or are most folks wanting 3" only?

For my purposes I tend to lean towards 3" only. But I run across deals on 2.5" somewhat regularly.

I prefer 3” but I’m not opposed to 2-1/2”. Beggars can’t be choosers

What kind of deals?

I like .410, what a great pest round. I have given thought to getting a Taurus Judge for a snake and critter fixer, but may not if I can't get the ammo.

Local, estate type sales. I've been avoiding a lot of 2.5" #7.5 and #8 at around $7-8 per box over the past couple of years.
I’ll take all you can find for that price. We used to use a lot of that for our youth group at church when we take them shooting. I’ve had to use my 28 ga lately but I only have an over/under and it’s a little heavier than my single shot 410 and they don’t like it as much

I'll start grabbing what I can find then. I just don't use the lighter loads at all. If I get a good pile going I'll give ya a holler.

Last I checked Fuquay Gun had bird shot for about $20 a box but that isn't helping the OP. I have a little but need to grab more.

I want a Henry in 410 and have no idea why.... Just want one.

I do two things with 410.
-Let the kids shoot the Mossberg 500's during shotgun day we have on the mountain. (skeet) They go bonkers over it.
-Shoot snakes. Mostly with the Judge.

I can substitute rat shot in a 38 or something for cappin' snakes. But it's hard to find a sub for 410 and kids that are maybe 11 or 12. Moving them up to the 20ga. is a bit much especially for the young girls. That's my main sad-face for not being able to stock up.
There's a neat CZ Drake O/U in the BST that would be perfect for play and the $ is reasonable enough, but he's struggling to move it and I'd bet much of that is because ammo is a pita.
Plus 410 gives me the chance to turn the young-uns into Americans before the freaks get to them.

28 ga is a great alternative. And it’s reasonably priced compared to 410 ammo. I can find 28 ga between $11-$14 a box

I've considered 28 and it's not a deal breaker but I'd rather not adopt another caliber. I'd do it if I have to though.

I keep looking at that and for the same reason. But I have the SxS here already.

a similar option, in 22lr:
