June 2023 22lr Rimfire 50 yd Challenge

Very quiet this month. Tried a different CZ 457 with the manners stock. The 5 shot groups warming up were very good. Got a good start on the target, then fell apart. Still shooting off an unstable platform. I will get out to the range one more time before the end of the month.

Still good shooting. Am planning on getting out a few more times but out of town on vacation so will have to wait.

I've wanted to test this concept for awhile. Anyone want to shoot something like this? It might make a difference to target acquisition or such.

comments appreciated...

The 4 colors are a test on this one to see if they help or hurt and if one is better than the others. I've already seen what gray does with previous targets that had big pictures of clay pigeons.

I’ll print some off this week and give them a shot the weekend. I’ll try to shoot both back to back and give some feedback.

Finally got out today.
Still checking to see what the rifle likes more so started out with some STD+, but while groups are impressive for its price, the consistency isn’t quite there. ES 35 and SD of 9 were actually great for this ammo,

Long Range Match looked like it was going to be junk after a couple terrible groups, but I went for it anyway. Got a 96. ES 17 and SD 4.8 were actually really good! Not sure what I did on that one that blew it.

Rifle Match was good as always, and expected to clear the card easy, because it was hammering thru one small hole in the groups. Didn’t happen and had to settle for a 96 also. ES 67 and SD 13.1 were terrible. I’m wondering if the chrony was just off or something, because it shot way too good to be that different from the other two.

I didn’t worry too much about the X’s, so erred on the side of no when close.

Forgot to take pics of the rifle. Same CZ 457 Shilen Barrel in KRG Bravo I have feen shooting. I added a pic from one of the last months.

Time running out people. Am hoping to get out at least one more time before July. Hopefully more though.
We’re coming after your high score @Eric F !

Great shooting Smokey! So close to perfect. I may not be out again, so it is open season Amps 13. 6 days to go.

I did get back out and this time decided to try some more with the RWS Rifle Match my uncle picked up last year for $5 a box. Still wish I had gotten more at that price.

I shot 2 96’s in a row and thought I had the 100 until I walked to the target. Bottom left ram is a miss. I can see the edge of the grease ring just inside the black of the belly and the leg. Knew I had to go again…

100 on the final! X’s never had a chance. Honestly just happy to get the 100 with ammo that cost $5, but it is definitely better than that and cost more like $10-11 now. The ammo was very consistent too. ES of 23 and SD of 6.

Went ahead and shot one target with SK RM, but stopped when I missed on the 3rd row to not waste ammo.

Last two RWS RM targets below and updated pics of the setup.

I believe that bottom row ram is a 5. It looks like there is no white showing between both chest and leg. I'd bet money a scoring plug would have shown how good a shot that was.

If you have calipers, measure all the diameters of shots in white paper and I bet they'll show that you're penalizing yourself.

A plug would have definitely given it or even calipers. As this is friendly competition only, I didn’t want to go there. And I wanted to clearly get it too. And I want to keep this fun, as I enjoy what we have here. It was the first fun group shooting I did several years ago, and like that we still have it. So I just wanted to make it easy.

That is the hard part about paper games on a forum, you only have what people can see in a picture. That also makes this style of X tie breaker difficult too. Luckily with those 14 X’s being so clear, I didn’t have to worry about competing against that.

I like your stance on this.

I used to go to a friendly poker game. We used to limit it to $20 a head, and bets were quarters. We had a rule that the blinds went into the dinner fund for pizza/beer for the group. We invited a few new guys into the group and they wanted to spend more than $20 (because they sucked at poker) since the night wasn't over yet and the rest of us agreeing to that resulted in our fun games getting "serious". Nobody had a problem losing $20 for the night's entertainment especially when it meant you'd get a beer or two and dinner included in that. When people lost $50 they'd go home pissy. Ended up killing our little group.

Agree with @Litl_Red that it was a hit. Also agree that this is all for fun and if people are cheating it just hurts the challenge and is kinda dumb since we ain’t winning any prizes.
I know it’s hard for some who don’t have the skills (like me) to match our best shooters but it’s still fun to challenge yourself and watch as you improve. I think its hard to entice lesser shooters to join us as it takes a lot of fortitude to post a target with 50 while others are getting 100.

I like thinking of shooting like golf… most of the time, I’m competing against myself. I don’t worry about shooting a 72, because it ain’t gonna happen. I focus on what I can do and try to improve on that. I would hope that is what people would do here too. Don’t worry about beating the other guys, beat your best score.

New guy here. I retired a few years ago and my adult son and I started going to the range. We both liked going but only went like once.a month or so. Honestly because neither one of us was very proficient. We were OK and getting better. I then bought a decent bolt action rimfire rifle and it changed things for me. I was no longer going for the thrill of popping a few rounds off but going because I could actually hit what I was aiming at. I upgraded my optic, got a new rail, tinkered with the trigger, started buying different ammunition and watched a ton of YouTube videos. Next thing you know I was going to the range almost every week. Once I started going regularly I got to know the range staff and got to know many of the regulars. These people welcomed me and I found I really enjoyed being around them. I also found many of them shared not only my interest in firearms, but my values.

In the short time I've been on this forum, I've experience more of the same. This monthly competition illustrates this. I really enjoy shooting and would like to be somewhat competitive but I realize there are much better shooters than myself. When it comes to the competition I'm not going to take a very close or questionable hit myself, but would certainly not hesitate to give one of you that same hit. I'm also not worried that someone would actually cheat. I just don't get that vibe from this group. Just glad to be here.

Still trying to beat my best score. Haven't posted any lately, since it is hard to repeat. Shot a 92 with my Manners stock CZ 457 today in the wind. My misses are just high and I am sure it is ammo, since my aim is on target. Tried some RWS Rifle Match. Even in my warm up I was getting a random shot high. All part of learning what each rifle likes.

I want to congratulate all the participants on this target. I tried it early in the month and wasn't to successful. Due to weather, grandkids and now a range closure (temporary, but no reopening date) my hopes of being in this months competition is over.

I’m stuck on 2 misses per target. It seems like as soon as I have one miss It’s followed by another. Very frustrating. For me it’s really hard to do everything right 20 times in a row. I know that comes with practice but….

20 is a lot. The ammo really starts making a difference when you have to shoot 20 times.

Then it's a good thing I won't be around to make up the next target. I was thinking about 25 bulls like the usual benchrest targets. Just kidding....

It is true I won't be home for awhile, so hopefully somebody else will beat 14x. see y'all in Aug.

That was a great run Litl_Red. Just send out a proposed target for July to consider, since 14 x is going to be hard to beat. I am traveling in July, as well. Hope to print and shoot at our vacation spot.

Congratulations to @Litl_Red as he won our June Challenge with 14x’s beating out @Eric F who had 7x’s and @Smok3y who had 6 x’s.
per SOP @Eric F will be choosing our July Target since @Litl_Red won/picked last month.
keep an eye out for The new July shooting challenge Thread.

Good shooting and good target!

Leave comments on how you liked (or didn’t) shooting one target for the month instead of our standard 2.

Let's try this air rifle target for July. Print in black and white to save your ink. Shoot at 50 yards. Score as posted with 26 points being a perfect score. Tie breaker will be shooting the same target at 75 yards. Let me know if any issues printing. You can go directly to the web site to download it. Any questions, let me know. Good luck!
