……….. I am not a happy camper!

First, I arrive at my club range to find that, since my last visit, the electronic gate has crapped out. They have the old gate closed and locked with the old chain and padlock which no one bothered to send me the combo for. I lay on my horn until the CRO shows up and unlocks it for me. I then proceed to the Jeff Cooper pistol bays and the fun begins.

My main goal for this trip was to wring out the new Glock 42 .380 and sight in my carry ammo before I start carrying it. For this initial range session I brought an old box of Fiocchi FMJ, an old box of PMC JHP, an old box of Silver Bear FMJ, a new box of Fiocchi 90gr JHP and 2 boxes of my carry ammo Fiocchi 90gr XTP. I have 3 new OEM Glock mags and 1 new ETS mag. Then the fun ensued!

Malfunction Junction!!! Right from the start, failures to eject, a few failures to feed and a few stovepipes for good measure. All magazines and all ammo brands. Before anyone (Rampy) accuses me of limp wristing, you’re wrong. I ran a total of 140 rounds though it and the failures became less as more rounds were cycled through the mags. I had noticed the mag springs were very stiff as expected so I believe they just need to be worked in. I’m going to load them and leave them for a week before I shoot them again.

All rounds were impacting high and left but all remained within the torso of the IPSC target. I don’t know yet if this is a sight adjustment issue or a me issue. My eyes cannot focus a front sight anymore. All I see is a blur and that’s with full size sights. The dinky little front sight on the G42? Fugetaboutit! Because of this I can’t tell for sure where the front sight is in relationship to the rear sight. I will have my friend John shoot it to see if it’s the sight or me.

So, after I put the G42 away, I thought I’d put some rounds through my Ruger LCR 38spl. I shot a couple of cylinders of Speer Gold Dot. Then an old speed loader of Golden Sabre I had laying around. Then I started in on a box of Remington 158gr LSWCHP. Shot about a couple of cylinders through it and then, 4 rounds into the 3rd, the cylinder locks up. Wouldn’t budge.

Here’s why:

This one obviously skipped the crimping station at the factory. I think I’ll send the pictures to Remington and see what they say.

So at that point I surrendered to my fate and went home.I will admit though, a bad day at the range truly is better than a good day almost anywhere else! And the weather was fan-freaking-tastic!!!

don't you love accomplishing nothing you set out to do? The only time in my life I ever took just 1 gun to the range with me and 4 rounds in a bullet gets stuck in my brand new Glock 19. I didn't have the correct tools to remove it there. Drove 30 minutes to range so that I could shoot 4 freaking rounds. Lesson learned. Bring more guns..

Is it possible the recoil from the first 3 shots loosened it?
Probably. Hard to imagine not noticing a 357 length round when loading the cylinder. Also, I’m not sure the cylinder would have closed and cycled properly if the round was that long.

I've read stories of this happening in ammunition usually reserved for semis (9mm, 45acp) where the bullet "jumps" the crimp.

How could that round have fit in the box?
It didn't walk out of the case until it was under recoil. Just handling it there was no visual difference from any of the others. I'm going to pull on the rest of the bullets in the box to see if any others are loose before I contact Remington.

The round was the same length as all the others when I loaded it into the cylinder. When I got home I was able to push it back into the case with my finger and open the cylinder. I put it back in the case to illustrate how far it had come out under recoil for the photo.

Another thing I learned today is that the safety lever in the trigger of the G42 is much sharper than the one on my G19. Sharp enough to be painful to shoot. After I finish wringing it out, I'll replace it with a flat face trigger like the SSVI TYR trigger. Also, gonna have to replace the sights with some more visible ones. gonna wait until after I know I won't need to send it to Glock for any warranty work.

Is the sight issue related to its size or your vision? I’ve been shooting with +0.75 safety glasses and it makes a huge difference for me.

Not to be a wise guy, have you had an eye exam in two years or less?

My girlfriend has a g42 it jams at least a couple times every time we shoot it mostly stove pipes and not feeding

Seems they're not making Glocks like they used to. I bought my G19 Gen 2 around 1995. I literally took it from the shop to the range, took it out of the box and started shooting it. Not one single malfunction in 24 years!

The g42 seems to have a lot of problems from what I’ve seen online. I used to have a glock 43 9mm and I never had a single problem

Wife has a relatively new G43 and, whilst certainly no where close to the "20,000 rounds" sort of benchmark, has never yet had a failure.

I agree with y'all. My G43 has worked perfectly every time it's been to the range. But, my wife's G42 has had many feeding hiccups. And, I know she's not limp wristing it because it has malfunctioned with me shooting it as well.

I think the early 42s had issues. Call Glock and see if they have a recall or fix for it...I think that they did.
