Kinda like a rocket stove

I tried it a couple times. It works fairly well for a little while until your logs become unstable due to lack of mass on the internal section. I would use that method, but not if others are available.

It's like a Swedish Candle. I use 'em a lot! My favorite is a hollow section of dogwood or walnut.
When they have a hollow limb opening in the side, it works really well!

Here's a Swedish Candle.

My camping stove is a ammo can..
holds my coffee cup and pot.
and in the eve I fill it full o embers
I wake up to embers with out the need to start a fire all over

Ive seen things like this being sold in stores, where its an asterisks shape cut out of center (just punching a chain saw straight down to make a few pie slices but still leaving the edges in tact)

I see them at Walmart and Home Depot. There are folks paying $15-20 each for a cut up stump.

With a load of slab wood you could make a large number of these type stoves.

Some slab wood, a coat hanger and you are good to go!

Now I know what I am giving out for gifts this December 25th!

It's a Swiss Candle. You can make these with a chainsaw cutting down the length of a log, but leaving the base intact. It's the air flow through the cuts that make it work. A closed sided log could work if it's bored through and air can enter the base.

An arborist buddy of ours started making those for our annual fishing trip in the spring. We used it to cook up some stuff in a Dutch oven. Once it got sketchy or burning too big we pitched it in the fire.
They are a tad dangerous to make and take some time. He quit making them after a couple years and called them bs.

Haven't been around one since. It think I saw then in Ace Hardware for around $30 no too long ago.
