Large Bowie WIP

Since some of you guys like large knives I started this one today. Hopefully it will turn out nicely. Heat treat doesn’t always go as planned.

The heat treat and tempering was successful. This finish is 120 grit and will go to 400/600 grit

Think I’m going to go with a brushed etch finish and stag for the handle. I’m thinking it will suit the shape and finish.

Takes a long time to tweak the fit. Still lots to go.

That's where I was this past weekend with that sword. I was torn on combining wood and leather or just stacking leather. I went with the easy button . Looking forward to seeing this bowie when finished!

You did a really nice job on that short sword. I really like staked leather handles. And it’s more difficult than people realize.
On this handle i’m trying to leave as much stag as possible without sanding any bark away. Probably not going to happen but that’s the plan.
So this is it for today. Got the micarta inserts epoxied up and rough sanded. The mating fit with the stag is pretty good at this point.

I decided the micarta spacers didn’t compliment the Bowie and it made the handle to long proportionally. And it is a beautiful piece of stag so I’m ready to epoxy this bad boy up as pictured.
